James Maddison

How can this guy not get start for England ??? That midfield 3 of Rice, Hendo & Barkley is painful. Not a massive fan of playing 2 DMs in Intl football as most of the teams England play are dross but if you are gonna do it at least play 4-2-3-1

Would have loved Maddison at Spurs, would have been the perfect LT replacement for Eriksen.... Oh well, when he does move, it will be for mega bucks & wont be to us.....Another missed opportunity, Spurs dropping the ball again.... Maddison & Tielemanns. No wonder Leicester are making good progress and we're fumbling around as per usual

Barkley just isn't good enough, he has spells but if he's a starter England won't be winning anything.

Rice is massively overrated. Other than being a big lad in the middle what else does he offer. He's not very mobile. His basic passing is ok but for me looks like a CB playing in midfield. Would rather have Winks play that role.

Totally agree with kash. Rice is Dier in disguise, and we Spurs fans had to listen to years of moaning from England supporters about Dier being so bang average. Rice needs to stop passing backwards, it doesn't ever help the team and it's miserable to watch. If you can't take a pass with your back to play, and then find a forward (or at least sideways positive) move, don't pretend you're a top level midfielder.

I know there's a bit of a bandwagon thing going on with Maddison atm but actually I don't really understand his lack of game time for England.

Barkley has never really established himself for Chelsea and appears to be consistently inconsistent. I certainly wouldn't want to rely on him being the creative spark from midfield.

Then Mount comes off the bench. Now from the little I've seen I really like the look of Mount and he's started the season impressively for Chelsea but how can he be ahead of Maddison in the pecking order off the back of 4 good games for Chelsea? He's played 6 top level games of football and a third of them are for England!

Maddison has earned a chance off the back of a good season last year and a good start this year. It would appear Southgate disagrees though sadly.

Re-CM; I'm not actually averse to 2 more defensively minded players in CM. Our FBs are attacking and our front 3 are excellent but our CBs need protection. A Henderson and Winks/Rice combo may not be exciting but it's probably needed.

I'm not a big Barkley fan but he had a decent game last night but he shouldn't be starting over Maddison. I too wished we had gone in for Maddison as a replacement for Eriksen. That boat has well and truly sailed now, or it was never at the dock to begin with.

You think Barkley had a good game last night?! He was dreadful!

He's one of those players I always wanted to succeed for England's benefit, but I just don't think he's developed into a very good player. He's OK, very good in brief inconsistent spurts, but I think he suffers for not clearly being a #8 or a #10 so I don't think he fits neatly into most formations, a bit like Dele Alli.

A midfield of 2 from Winks, Henderson and Loftus-Cheek would work for me (Loftus-Cheek more against weaker opposition), and then Maddison competing with Alli for the spot behind Kane.

was banging the Maddison to spurs drum a bit last season and it generally got met with criticism from fellow spurs fans.... he is exactly the kind of profile of player that does well at spurs. young, attack minded, and talented.

I didn't think he was as bad as was made out no. Better than many others on the pitch. I still wouldn't have him starting if everyone was fit and available.

Fair.

I thought Barkley was bad, but Rice, Alexander-Arnold and Keane were diabolical.

I don’t get the hype about Rice

posted on 12/9/19

The Rice hype peaked mid last season where for some reason most fans of top 6 clubs wanted him to start for their teams, and I saw way more comments than I should have that he could replace Fernandinho at City. Now people have chilled out and seen him what he is, a decent DM, maybe a peak of Dier level (who to suffered the same hype!). Both players in my opinion are so obviously more suited to just being CB I’m not sure why they’re brought up as a DM.
