The game was won in midfield. Gueye and Verratti were magnificent.

I doubt Zidane would be better for any team right now. What he achieved at Real was due to the players he had, especially one C. Ronaldo. He's left and they've not been the same. They have made some good signings over the summer but they also failed to get rid of players and some have been kept due to injuries and other various issues.

He shouldn't have come back. He could have gone to Juventus waited for Bayern instead and walked the league there and enhanced his reputation.

I always had my doubts about Zidane back at the time, but I think the pendulum of opinion on him is swinging way too far in the other direction now.

No matter which way you cut it, the first-stint successes can't all be put down to the players, let alone just one of them. As much as CR was so often the standout performer, there were also key games where others stepped up to the plate. ZZ's man management back then was outstanding, and more than once it was the tactical planning that won games.

Fast forward to the current situation. The squad planning, despite the outlay on new signings, has been poor, especially as regards the midfield. The handling of the Bale affair was baffling (though Bale so far has looked more motivated and driven to prove a point than he has for a long time). Loaning Reguilón out was a mystifying decision too, as it means taking a gamble on Marcelo -an incredibly weak link all of last season- with no-one to really challenge him for his spot.

The thing is that it's never too clear at Madrid just how much of the transfer policy is the manager's decision alone, and how much of it is on Pérez.

Notwithstanding all of the above, there have been early signs of improvement over last year (admittedly, the bar could hardly have been set lower), so even though the expectations aren't great, I for one am certainly not for throwing in the towel or giving up on Zidane so soon.

Not sure I can think of a use of a word that annoys me more than "poverty", of late.

I think he's time away and return we're wrong decisions. He should not have come back. At either Bayern or Juventus he'd have been able to manage top players as well have improved himself as a manager. He has limitations as a manager as well as restrictions from above to really it into place what he wants. He doesn't want Bale despite Bale's talent yet wasn't allowed to reshape the side as he saw fit. He'd have had a better chance of that at either of the other sides. His reputation in football won't be hurt as he's still a Juventus great who could get the job there whatever happens at Real this time round.

There was also an underestimation of Ronaldo and what he brought to a side, even when he's not at his best. It would take time to change and bring in a new system, something that works without him. I think Zidane would have been given a better chance of doing so at Bayern than REAL. With Juventus he'd have Ronaldo again.
