Derby County 2 - 0 Luton Town

Derby County v Luton Town
Pride Park
1500
5 Oct 2019

Here for the delectation of Baz:-

Apres the selection comes the reckoning at Pride Park and we await to see the reception that Tom Lawrence and Mason Bennett receive as they return to the home fold as they invariably will. I have made no secret of my feelings regarding this unedifying episode and in truth, time has not tempered this.

Funny one this, when was the last time we played Luton Town (2006-7)?On paper we should be confident but I was confident on Wednesday until the 94th minute!!!

Looks like Huddlestone and Marroiot will still be out so not sure who will fill that super tanker role just in front of the defence. Bielek looked good, does this mean Shinnie gets a look in?

Chris Martin continues to impress, I didn't know he was on loan at Luton 10 years ago , please don't expect him to be the great white hope, he's done us proud but there still needs to be more cohesion.

Team news as and when.

I thought the Luton fans were good. Rest of the match was poor, I often think of what Ian Hall used to say about performance.

Looking forward to playing Man U next season.

He's still drunk on Shinnie's performance.

What did Ian Hall have to say VC?

He used to say that the team needed to play well, not just scrape wins like we are doing now. He was always on about "performance".

I'm pleased we have picked up some points and won a couple of games, but am I being picky because I want to be entertained?

Team selection is a mystery to me, why doesn't Dowell get a few minutes to see if he's improved. One match Clarke is out, the next he's in. Why Waghorn was dropped and Zoon was played! Why Malone when Lowe did well? AND what is going on with Marriott?

AND why has my old friend Igor been banned? I don't remember him doing anything wrong.

Igor has chosen to take a bit of a sabbatical.

Marriott is injured.

I can only imagine he thought that with three games in a week giving Lowe and Malone one game each might be better than one getting tired. Maybe he hasn't decided yet which one he thinks is the better. Personally I think Lowe although Malone was decent enough.

With Marriott injured and Martin not likely to last the full ninety maybe he liked the idea of fresh legs coming on to replace him in the form of Waghorn. I'm just trying to guess his thinking. Like many of us I can't really understand the persistence with Josefzoon. Bennett would have been preferable for me, he always seems to link well with Bogle. I agree about Dowell but Shinnie did very well.

Use of the final ball has been poor in the last week although I thought that there have been flashes of promise. I'm quite patient and I think it's still very early days under Cocu, and he hasn't been helped by losing players for various reasons.

If Igor is taking a sabbatical, who is Silky?

I totally agree about Josefzoon. He has had plenty of chances to impress and he has only unimpressed - every time. It surely solves one selection problem. Leave him out and give someone else the chance.

Shinnie was a revelation on Saturday - head and shoulders - our best player.

Also, clearly Cocu doesn't believe in allowing a team to gel. Successful teams have usually used the smallest number of players. Chicken or egg? Successful teams don't need to change personnel. Teams which don't change personnel are successful. (obviously injuries and suspensions not included).

In our last promotion season we used 32 players in fact but that's probably an exception. Ideally you want at least a core who play every week - back four and keeper especially. Cocu has been unfortunate with the loss of Bogle and now Keogh who would have been first choices. Huddlestone had been chosen every match by Cocu but now will be out for months. Bielik is clearly a first choice player as is Lawrence, but that may change soon. Early in the season in fact there were few changes between matches and he seemed to be close to a settled line-up of probably:

Roos
Bogle Keogh Clarke Lowe/Malone
Huddlestone Bielik Holmes
Waghorn Marriott Lawrence

Not saying I agree this would have been our best team but I think that's where he was heading. Now it's a bit up in the air again.
