A little more PS5 news.

An interesting interview on Wired. Sony releasing a little more of what to expect with the PS5. Including a little about the interface and controller, which includes some interesting haptic feedback

People bought a PS2 because it had a DVD player? Really?

It was the first dvd player I had.

But you surely didn't buy it just for the DVD player as a USP? A PS2 having a DVD player had absolutely no impact on my decision to get a PS2. I upgrade my consoles because I want to play new and better games.

Yeah I think a lot of people bought a PS2 because it doubled as a DVD player.

I know it swung the purchase in my favour back in the day.

Tamwolf, Obviously I didn't simply buy the PS2 as a DVD player, as I could have simply bought a standalone device.

I bought it for my kids to use, and stole it if I fancied watching a DVD. The fact it played DVD's was certainly a big factor in buying it though.

This might have just been some rumour going around at the time, but wasn't the PS3 the cheapest blu-ray player on the market by a good few hundred quid at its release?

Couldn't care less tbh (especially now as I haven't bought a hard copy of a film / series for a good decade), but I can see why that could be the turning point for some families.

Quite right rooney, It was as you say the cheapest Blu Ray player by quite a matgin, and was another major reason for me buying the PS3.

Same for me. One of the big reasons which you allude to is it made it much easier for kids to convince parents to buy the console as they could also use it as a DVD player.

I don't think my parents ever used my PS2 as a DVD player but I still remember it being part of the reason I got one!

It was a huge bonus considering the cost of DVD players back in 2000. I was 11/12 and so excited to start buying films that were on shiny discs instead of horrible, big black tapes that I used some birthday money to buy the Nightmare on Elm Street collection and would sit in my room watching them with my younger sister.

The DVD/Blu-ray option was a huge selling point. Especially for parents buying their child a gaming system. It certainly swung many of my friends parents to PS. I don't think you should minimize just how much of a difference that made in Sony's success.

Crazy. I was just a teenager at the time and was in no way bothered by the DVD player aspect. Just wanted to play better games.

It went in my bedroom too, so the DVD player didn't influence my parents.
