Liverpool 70/80s V Man Utd 90/00s

With the biggest match in English football fast approaching...

Who had the better team?

5 Liverpool 1970-1989
4 Man Utd 1990-2009

Liverpool from 1970-1989 won

10 league titles
4 European Cups winning back to back 77 + 78
2 UEFA Cups
1 Super Cup
7 domestic cups

Manchester United from 1990-2009 won

11 league titles
2 European Cups
1 Super Cup
1 Club World Cup
8 domestic cups

Both were considered the top dog in their leagues at the time and both teams had periods dominating the European scene.

Are they incomparable or does one better the other?

It’s funny how people label today’s lesser known teams as weak back in the European Cup days, with the suggestion that it lessens the value of winning it.

I’m assuming it’s only the younger one’s who do this.....
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They forget that each team were in fact champions of their own league, no matter how weak that league is perceived to be

It's usually just a stick to attempt to beat us with

Nobody give a toss that Real Madrid beat Reims (twice), Eintracht Frankfurt, & Fiorentina in 4 of the first 5 finals

I still don't know who said "today’s lesser known teams as weak back in the European Cup days"
Who said that?

Fair to say that it's easier to get into the Champions League rather than the European Cup but maybe harder to win back then, based on it being a knock-out tourny.

I've noticed this time and time again

"Oh, you only beat club FC Brugge, you only beat Borussia Mönchengladbach"

Liverpool team was before my time, but wasn't the european cup less rounds and no group stage back then?
for that reason utd might edge it for some people?

Re:metro, it is amazing you've won those trophies in your "poorer" spell.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
clearly you've no understanding of the difficulty of european travel and eastern European reffing in the old European cup. -

As a straight knockout competition is was more difficult. Frankly the group stages these days is very easy. spurs proved that last year.

In ye olden days we would not have won no 6 last year as we'd have gone out to napoli round 1. never mind the disaster at red star.

Refereeing in ye olden days was infamous and if you went behind the iron curtain you could be assured of being cheated.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
get the tin foil hat out son.
As I said it's before my time, but less game would be easier no matter how you look at it.
Your spurs excuse is a random one, as they struggled to get out the group and had a group of PSV,Barca and Inter. Much harder. Chelsea as reigning euro champs also got knocked out in group stages.

Don't be so defensive.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Without being defensive, less games doesn’t make it easier to win. The group stages gives sides the chance to progress even if you lose 3-4 of your games. The old format would see you out of the competition with those results.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You could always lose 3-4 games and progress in the European cup. Lose away 1 - 0, Win at home 2- 0 and you progress. Do this in every knockout rounda and you get to the final having lost 3-4 games.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but in the 64-65 season, we were playing FC Koln in the European Cup quarter final and the game ended in a draw.

It was settled by .... no, not penalties.

A coin toss

Best part was, on the first attempt, it landed vertically in the mud and had to be tossed again

Watch it here (from about the 3 minute mark)

Its a pretty irrational point. Says more about the intelligence of the person stating it tbh.

That's brilliant. Just looked the tournament up on wiki.

Benfica had the 2 top scorers, Eusebio and Torres, who managed to scored 9 goals each over 7 games.
