The EFL Cup

OK, so it's the cup nobody likes, unless you are a lower league team with a Premeirship team comming to town.

But it's here, and we have to play it, so to get interested, I looked up the history of this cup, and it suprises me, that how many of the so called big premier teams have never won it. Also, it surprises me how few times since it inception, that teams like Arsenal and Chelsea have won it, given their respective dominance during the naughties, and the Abramovich era for Chelsea.

You would like to think, that the teams that are always in and around the mid table of the prem would take this competition seruiously, as it it is a path into Europe, and a realistic chance of a trophy.

Since it's debut, there have only been 23 winners of this competition since the first competition in 1961, this year is the 60th anniversary of the League cup. I know it's wiki, but please see the link, it might surprise you:-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EFL_Cup

This week there are some juicy ties Liverpool v Arsenal, Chelsea v Man Utd, and a midlands derby Aston Villa v Wolves.

It's mid week, and we all clamour for the weekend fixtures, but these games, for mid week, are an added bonus for the fans.

I just thought, as it's a slow day on here, and everybody is talking about VAR that perhaps we could discuss something different for a change, we never talk about the EFL Cup on here. So I thought I would at least try and change the theme for a bit.

Lets all talk about how the prestige of the cup has deminished over the years, how it's a nice day out for the finalists, how it helps the lower league teams.... e.c.t.... even if it breaks the mundane debates about VAR.

ADMIN, can you please multi board this, as I would like to get everybody involved.

I like winning it. It's early in the season, and you've already had a good season. It's at Wembley and a good day out.

I like the EFL cup too. Especially 1991

There are some really good things about the EFL cup. It is fun and allows you to see younger players and different formations. It is an opportunity for people who don’t normally get to a game to go along with reduced seat prices. The final is a good day out. And in the end if you slip up hey ho it’s not a big deal.

The downside is obvs even more fixtures in a congested calendar,

You can see the importance of this competition to some clubs.

Colchester won last night, now they will get to play either Chelsea or Man Utd in the next round.

Ties like that alone gives this cup some significance. That tie could boost the coffers for a small team like Colchester.

Surely the draw hasn't yet been made. Isn't it usually once all matches are done and at about 3 in the morning somewhere in Asia?
