VAR and Divers

Who would have thought that the system that was brought in to give Refs an extra pair of eyes would be used to cheat them.So VAR allows us to see the slight touches that Refs would miss and therefore some footballers have cleverly played on it especially Sadio Mane who has been called out by Pep for cheating.

Obviously Pep is playing mind games and it would be difficult for any referee to give Mane anything next week after his pathetic dive at Villa Park but there was contact. If the ref had initially given the Pen, then VAR would definitely not have overturned the decision.

So what is the correct way to manage this issue?

The mane decision was easier to make because of 2 factors
1. He was going nowhere, no real goal scoring chance
2. The defender did not kick out but made contact as he jostled with the player.

Then again Deulofeu dived last night, the ref saw it as exaggerated dive after minimal contact and VAR gave it. We saw a similar situation when Zaha created contact against Arsenal a week ago. The exact same thing Jamie Vardy used to be called out for. Ref saw it that way as he definitely felt that the player moved towards Chamber than away, but VAR sees the contact and gives the pen.

The whole thing is a farce but how do you fix it because not all situations are the same?

Should we have like a Diver list almost in the way you have a sexual offenders list where the rules are slightly different when certain players are involved?

Lets face it we all know most of the players that try to buy penalties and they are getting clever at it.I almost feel sorry for the refs.

VAR has been a joke. What the VAR refs dont also seem to consider that contact observed on a slow replay and contact observed live are 2 totally different thing.

The slow frames makes things worse than they are

I think the game needs it but the problem is the people using it are clowns.

I don’t think Suarez started it - he’s just one of the worst.

This goes back way before him but it never used to be the case that pretty much all players on a pitch were constantly trying to con the referee, but it is now.

Unfortunately football has gone the way that any kind of contact in a slow-motion replay can justify the most blatent of dives. VAR should be scrapped imo and replaced with greater retrospective action post-match.

That wont stop teams from unfairly dropping points, not that VAR has stopped that happening this season

My thoughts exactly. Zaha initiated contact with with Chambers, rather than the Arsenal defender "fouling" him. Never a pen in my book. Same scenario presented itself in yesterday's match. Richarlison went over Sanchez's outstretched leg in a nothing situation. Pen was rightfully not given. Can't remember if var was even required.

This mess was and is been created by English football. No law in the FIFA handbook says a contact in the 18 yard box equates a foul and hence a deserving of a penalty. It's a contact sport ffs. Now players are going down at the slightest of any touch and chronic divers like Zaha, Kane and the Liverpool duo taking full advantage. Hate where the game's headed.

I think the Zaha one is a pen in my book.
