Leicester v Arsenal JA Pre Match Thread

Another week and another game. This time it’s against Arsenal. Playing Arsenal is one of the games I’ve least looked forward to in recent times. Defeat seemed more inevitable than against almost any other club. Even in the title winning season we only lost 3 games – and 2 of those were against Arsenal. That’s why I thought our 3-0 win against them last season was a little bit special. Could it be the start of an era when we’re much closer to them than we were previously?

There have been a few memorable games against this side. Who could forget our away defeat against them in the title season when they scored right at the end? It felt, at the time, that it could be a turning moment in the title race. Of course, history now tells us it was probably the point where momentum turned and Spurs ultimately finished 3rd in a two horse race.

I’m going a bit further back for my most memorable game though. It was the MON era in 1997 and we played a very good Arsenal side that would ultimately win the league that season. A 3-3 draw in a game we very well might have won, but for a masterclass from a certain Dennis Bergkamp who scored a hat-trick. The frustration of not winning mitigated a little by the fact we’d just seen a genius in action. Anybody who has not seen that game really should look it up on youtube.

After another decent win against a team we’ve historically struggled against there isn’t much to talk about is there? It’ll be the same team and same formation. Even Chilwell has started to perform a little bit after a slow start. Maybe the one person Brendan might think a little about is Barnes. He’s been a bit hit and miss so far. Does anyone think that Brendan will be tempted to start with Demarai Gray? He’s had a few good cameos of late. I wouldn’t start Gray myself, but you could make an argument for resting Barnes and playing Gray purely on form. The trouble with this is that, as we know, Gray rarely performs when he starts.

Some people are saying that we start as favourites for this one. Favourites against Arsenal? I refuse to accept it. It’s still against my Leicester DNA to think we’ll win a game like this. I still prefer to expect very little and hopefully be surprised. We’re plucky underdogs aren’t we? Favourites? Pah!!

Is there much point in trying to guess the team? Well here goes nothing:

Schmeichel
Ricardo Evans Soyuncu Chilwell
Ndidi
Perez Maddison Tielemans Barnes
Vardy

This is of course hoping that the favoured Puelball formation with 2 DMs has been permanently consigned to the bin of history where it belongs.

Not so sure about the subs:

Subs:
Ward Justin Morgan Choudhury Praet Iheanacho Gray

Interestingly my autocorrect comes up with Ian as 'I headache'.

Ha, as if that team would ever happen Nuneaton 😂

Feel he may bring Gray in

You mean he still hasn't learnt the Demari lesson? Who do you want to drop by the way, Barnes or Perez (both of whom in my view are way ahead of Gray in the pecking order)?

I’m not a big Gray fan, but he has done well coming on recently so is obviously showing the right attitude.

To be honest, if Perez hadn’t scored that hat trick then, performances in training permitting, I too wouldn’t be surprised in Gray had replaced him today.

I expect the same 11 and if Gray keeps showing the right attitude, feel much more confident with our options on the bench nowadays.

I don’t think anyone should be dropped but I think he may give Gray the nod ahead of Barnes based on his recent cameos (like he did with Barnes previously.

They look good and young team too. Think the worst thing that could happen to them is the transfer ban gets lifted and they bring in a player that disjoints current team
