Last night for me showed how desperately we need to get a creative AM into the team to gel the attacking line together. Mata did the role last night and we looked a lot more fluid in attack with an intelligent and creative player in the centre, linking the attacking 3 and making use of their pace and movement.
I know that the opponents weren't great and that Mata is passed his best now and won't be able to do it again the best teams, but what he did last night just highlighted for me what we are missing.
What I would really love is for Gomes to step into that role, but I have to accept that it is probably too much to expect of him right now. Pogba is the one in the squad that would probably be the best option at the moment, but I don't think that he is prefect for what we need there. Maddison seems a better fit for that role and I can see why we are heavily linked with him. Probably best for us to get rid of Pogba, bring Maddison in and sign another CM that will better compliment McT. Hopefully we can also tie Gomes up to a new contract and let him be back-up to Maddison for a few years whilst he matures.
There is also Garner to consider, but again, probably too young to expect too much from him yet. But in a few years, him sat deep ala Carrick, McT ahead as the box to box, with Maddison the furthest forwards could be a strong midfield.

I'm also a fan of Havertz. I do think we need someone there though an attacking MF might be better in the current set up. While McTominay is OK, our midfield is poor with the ball (sloppy in possession and lose the ball easily).
I'd say we need an AM a deep lying player akin to Carrick and a second striker so we have some tactical flexibility.

Dybala would've been great for that flexibility if Ole didn't deem him to be not fully committed.
