The football was very entertaining, from spanning sheff u in promotion season to 6-1 sheff we’d, 4-1 villa, Stuttgart, Monaco etc.

Every player could score, best midfield in country top scorer in league, goals of the season etc.

Pretty much everything Wilko touched turned to gold until we sold cantona. Then the incoming transfers were very poor and football went downhill.

The good times far far outweighed the bad times under Wilko.

Legend.

Of course they were highlights during the title
winning season which you have outlined and yes
some exciting games, especially when you win!
But in my view it was largely method football, as I
previously wrote he made the pitch smaller, cutting
down space to play.

Going into the month of March we were head to head
with our friends from Manchester, then a series of
bad results put them into firm favourites, with games
in hand...but then some bad results in April from
them suddenly galvanised us, their games in hand
came to nothing...we emerged victorious!
Doesn't Man Utd implosion remind you of our
implosion last year, almost identical.

Kebab, there's a minimum of two players you've mentioned that I'd have before Cantona!..

Radebe and Yeboah!..

Bowyer and Martyn were also good for us!..

'Yeboah'... now there's a name - Imagine him and Cantona in the same team

1989/90 - promoted
1990/91 - 4th
1991/92 - champions
1992/93 - 17th
1993/94 - 5th
1994/95 - 5th
1995/96 - 13th
1996/97 - sacked after 5 games with 7points attained

5 great seasons from 7
European football
Club run financially stable
Stadium improvements -new east stand
Training ground
Memories of watching some truly great footballers

And all that ever gets mentioned is Eric fking cantona

The bloke should have a statue outside the ground.

Kebab...all those finishing positions you highlight
just proves we didn't kick on from winning the
title...why didn't we kick on, we had every incentive,
the European games were an anti climax...

Why did our friends from over the Pennines kick on
after a disastrous implosion the season before?

Because they had a better manager - the greatest ever in the majority of peoples opinion.

We had a relatively old team when we won the league and replacing players like Strachan chapman Whyte sterland is not easy. Other players like Dorigo struggled with injury and others lost form.
Clearly we dropped off. Clearly there were some poor signings. The club wasn’t made of money back then neither and a lot of players we signed were low budget.
However im a firm believer in sticking with someone who had given us so much. Wilkinson would have brought those players through in time and we would have been just fine. Damn sure he’d have kept ridsdale under lock and key too!

Yeah okay

Ferguson was under pressure before he became 'greatest ever' more likely to get the sack but then
he called his friend Howard Wilkinson, persuaded
him to part with our best asset...what did we get out
of the deal? Enough money to feed the club cat for
a year! We were diminished as a club! They kicked
on, we stayed in the same place.

I think the fact they had
Beckham gneville Giggs scholes PNeville and butt all come of age together was a far bigger influence than signing Eric cantona. He was only there 4 years of the 20 dominating seasons. Without that influx of world class talent Man Utd would never have done what they did.
Our crop were coming but it was sadly too late for Howard

We weren't financially stable, Cantona went for financial reasons.
