Ronaldo

On 98 international goals now after a hat trick last night.

12 more needed to break the all time record.

You wouldn’t bet against him now would you?

What an achievement that would be to do it for European nation in this era.

Now over 700 goals for club and country. Absolutely incredible.

The 800 mark isn’t out of the question; I think he could play for another three and a half years at the top level of the club game and for his country yet, which would surely see him cruise past that target.

The greatest goalscorer of all time, IMO.

He’s not the greatest goal scorer.

Messi has more goals at club level in less appearances. Messi will most likely surpass Ronaldo total goals by time he retires

Robbie Keane ended up with 60 odd and thats while playing for Ireland. These qualifying games are a joke at times with the mismatch. Still a fantastic achievement for one of the best.

Robbie Keane was a brilliant international player, 60 odd goals against top countries and in major tournies.

You're also completely disregarding the goals Romario scored in his back yard there

That’s your opinion. It can differ from mine.

Messi might have more goals at club level, but he’s been at one side - which was for a long period very comfortably the very best in the world - his entire career and had the benefit of the team being completely built around him.

And I’m quite sure Ronaldo will still be playing after Messi retires.

I personally don't think the one team thing in any way detracts from Messi's achievements. Because when they were the best in the world, he was still the best player and the man who made Barca great at that time imo. Conversely, now, Barca aren't that good, and Messi is having to dig them out of a hole on a weekly basis. They were rubbish at the start of the season. The only difference in that Barca team is that he's now in it and they're top of the league. It sounds simple, but it really is that simple.

Having said that, 2 or 3 years ago CR7 was virtually singlehandedly carrying Real through the latter stages of Europe's elite competition. And Barca were never as rekisbt on Messi as that Real team were in Ronaldo.

So it is a question of preference and nobody can definitively say who the better player is and was. Personally I'd say Messi, but it is an opinion which some will agree with and others won't.

Does that mean

There’s also a difference between the better player (Messi IMO) and the better goalscorer (Ronaldo IMO).
