This is tragic

A testimonial for Phil Jones will not be happening. When he signed a new contract in February, it was part of the deal, but he was against it due his decreasing popularity. He is self-deprecating about it and says only his mum and dad would attend. [the athletic]

How absolutely tragic that a player who’s served a club so long feels that unloved by his fans!

Bunch of plastics

KLS didn't think that one through...

Depay was utterly useless and now he's killing it for club and Country.
Smalling wasn't good enough, but killing it for Roma that he's wanted by several clubs there.
Jones to be the next one to move Italy and suddenly he'll never be injured and they'll be calling him the English Berasi.

Firstly he gives his best every game/

so would you by buying a ticket to attend his testimonial game... ? or you will expect us ST holders to pay for it and attend on your behalf so you can pat yourself on the back and say 'he got a good testimonial attendance, and he deserved it?

I feel so sorry for you to be in the position to be a ST holder. My heart s for you having experienced more success and happiness than most club's entire histories, and now have suffer so horribly.

ahh, Dave the font of zero knowledge

Just to let you know I have bee a ST holder since the early 1970s. Which means yes I did see the Fergie years. But I also saw the Atkinson, Sexton Doc and Frank years too. I can assure you (not that you would know of course, is that most of those years were quite painful. Involved a relegation, too. And if you had any idea about what football testimonials are really all about they have no place in modern day PL football with the money players earn. Even for Phil 'Duncan Edwards' Jones.

Don't they donate the proceeds to charity these days?

Yeah pretty sure the players don’t keep the gate receipts. The issue is that 50 years ago you didn’t have squad players so if you were at a club for a decade then you were likely playing week in week out for all those 10 years which shows real loyalty and the money earnt from the testimonial probably helped massively when leaving behind your football career.

It’s not really Jones’ fault, but I can see why some fans feel he isn’t really deserving of a testimonial. It’s quite rare for a club to keep a player so long and not really be a regular or even a reliable squad player.

Do feel a bit sorry for him. As said above it's such a rare thing to be at a club so long and not to have contributed enough to earn a testimonial. An properly run football club would have been shot of him long ago so as not have put him in this embarrassing position.
