"Arteta-ball" vs Player Endurance.

A simple question really.

Do our players have the lungs to keep up with the pace of football that Arteta demands over 90 minutes?

It was clear that our players were winded by the half hour mark today. We started off well, but you could notice the laboured breathing and the heavy feet as early as the 25th minute.

We were basically running on fumes for about 60 out of the 90 minutes.

Nothing could summarise today's game better than the sight of a 31-year old Willian galloping past a flagging 18-year old Saka during a counter attack in the 82nd minute.

Amazing that professional athletes looked shattered that early on! If Wenger imbedded this on purpose it goes to show why we have been no where near the title in so long.

The sad thing is that the fans will focus on a 30-minute Ozil highlight reel, rather than the fact that he was dead on his feet by half time.

To be fair, that was our best 45 minutes this season. Our problem was we couldn't sustain the intensity, and the early injury and forced sub didn't help. If we play like that for 90 minutes we can beat any team.

The player have been lazing around..time for them to kick about!

I don't think it's that straightforward.

A big reason behind our transition to a slower and more passive style of play was Wenger's attempt at controlling our woeful injury record. The funny thing is that it worked.

It worked? We had horrendous injury crises nearly every season with Wenger... I'm not surprised that some players are picking up injuries under Arteta either, they're suddenly being asked to play at much higher intensity than they are used to and their muscles / anti-contact reactions are not yet up to speed.

It looked like we'd brought our ridiculous injury record under control during Wenger's last 2 seasons or so. Especially after Wenger admitted to slowing things down after a string of leaks criticising our gladiatorial training methods started coming out.

Arteta has already said the players fitness has to improve. If it does, then we should see a performance like first half continue for longer. We also have a lot of injuries which hasn’t helped, so we’ve not been able to rotate in this busy period.

It’s clear as well many of these players just aren’t good enough to get us near the top 4. I highly doubt any coach could get this squad top 4 without binning a load of players and bringing in new ones

Arteta has to be backed now in each window or it’s pointless changing manager, these players won’t get us to where we need to be, and half of them won’t fit his style. Probably only a handful would get into any top half premiership team. We simply don’t have the quality in this squad

I also remember hearing about no contact / minimal contact training sessions with Wenger which meant the players were not physically or mentally prepared for contact in matches.

I knw its not the same but remember when Klopp and Pep first came to City/Pool. They were pressing left right and center and just faded after 60ish mins.

If will take time but fitness levels will improve.

Also have to make sure we back the manager and sign the right players.

I don't understand how professional footballers can be struggling to have the right level of fitness?! I mean, isn't this what they do all day? How can something as fundamental as a high level of stamina be missing. Beggars belief

Different tasks demand different types of training.
Like someone who could run a marathon has great stamina but can struggle in a continual stop/start manner as in football.
The way Arteta is getting them to play is even more than what they usually do sustained over a 90min period, once they train a bit more they should get use to it.
