VAR and offside

Right - my take on the ongoing VAR debate regarding offside. For me we need to go back to the purpose of the offside rule - to stop players gaining an advantage by goal hanging.

I think VAR should use the phrase ‘gain an advantage’. If your big toe is off side and you reach the ball ahead of a defender by a big toe difference you’re offside. If, however, the player gets the ball by a metre ahead of the defender then he hasn’t gained an advantage! Simple, quick decision. Most of the time you will be able to make that judgement in seconds.

I also think the VAR team should have a maximum of 30 seconds to review - if it takes longer it’s not a clear and obvious mistake so stick with the original decision!

Mezut Ozil will always be offside because of his eyes!

its patently obvious it takes too long as the tech is not up to it.

poor camera angles and it's impossible to really be sure which frame to take for when ball is played.means these stupid lines and verticals into armpits are plain ridiculous.

if the linesman flags (and he shouldn't if the thing is central) then hes.made an on field decision. the person should be clearly onside and it should be simple to do so with a line and a frame.

make it all about feet and not about body parts and you greatly simplify.

If it takes longer than 30 secs to resolve, they should just go with the on-field decision

I think Souness made an interesting suggestion which would solve all this shіtе once and for all.

If any part of the body is ONSIDE then by definition the player cannot be offside.

Thoughts?

Been thinking about this, and I honestly can't come up with a better solution. Pretty much back to the definition they had years ago where there had to be clear daylight between the players.

There never had to be daylight between players. The offside rul has been pretty much the same since 1990 when "level" changed from offside to onside. The daylight thing was a suggestion on how linesman could come to their decision if they were genuinely unsure.

VAR is significantly more accurate than relying on a linesman. If they change it to Souness suggestion nothing will change. You will still get calls based on CMs and everyone will still moan because they are unhappy with the decision.
