So I read that IFAB (the dudes that make the football rules) are meeting in February to discuss how VAR is currently being used - or rather misused.
This is great because I think VAR has got a lot of unfair stick. The technology - when used well, is a good thing. An example of that would be the 2018 World Cup. The problem we are seeing right now isn’t down to VAR, it’s down to the absurdity of how the premier league have introduced it - and that’s something all fans should remember
IFAB have basically said that VAR was never meant to be used to spend minutes reviewing fractional offsides from multiple angles - it was simply designed to overrule clear and obvious errors. It’s original design was to pick up obvious things the referee missed - in the case of offsides for example - the striker clearly being a yard off
What IFAB have said is that for fractional offsides, where it’s impossible to really tell, the original decision should stand. VAR will only be brought into use when it’s obvious an offside has been missed or a goal has been incorrectly ruled out
I think this is a good thing - the premier league, in their attempt to try and be different from the rest of the footballing world, have made a total mess of this technology. I’d like to see pitch side monitors being used and VAR brought in only for clear and obvious offside calls.
Posting this on the Liverpool board because they are one of the biggest victims of VAR. It’s definitely cost them 2 points
