This is for that stato united fan

I wonder if he asked the bbc to create that article.

He is always insisting that united should be above liverpool based on xgoals but clearly that is not the case

I’m more interested in expected spelling mistakes, thus my comment
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Where’s the full stop at the end of the sentence?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Deliberate mistake, I’m feeling quite wacky today
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Living on the edge!

You don’t know the half of it, I’ve just done 32mph in a 30

Expected goals is the biggest pile of horsechit I have ever heard of
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This, it’s absolutely reetarded.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It can be quite useful if you use it right.

I think it actually suffers from a branding problem. In calling it "expected goals", the stat is being pitted against actual goals scored. So inevitably because there's always a discrepancy, people think it's BS.

It would be more accurate to describe it as something like "quality of chances created" or "quality of chances conceded".

The whole point of the stat is that by comparing it to the real goals scored/conceded, you can get a rough idea of the quality of your finishing or defending. If you look at your star striker's shot history, and calculate that the average player scores 20% of the time based on those exact same shots, but your star striker has scored 45%, then there's a good argument to say that your striker is a pretty damn good finisher.

Of course, there are some big holes with the xG stat, the main one being that it pretty much doesn't take into account at all the defensive structure of the opposition team. So counter-attacking teams will usually do better than their xG suggests, while slow possession teams will do worse than xG.

"So counter-attacking teams will usually do better than their xG suggests, while slow possession teams will do worse than xG."

^and that's why Hafi's arguments are usually complete nonsense (if that needed clarifying). xG is not a measure of how much you "deserve" to win a game, it's a measure of how efficient you are at both ends of the pitch. And if you're consistently under-performing, it's not an issue of luck, it's a systemic and/or personnel issue

You do realise expected goals is calculated on how easy the shot was to score from so mainly location of shot compared to keepers chances of saving it. Usually the best players outperform the expected goals as they are better at finishing. It still bases all chances. Thats why Man Utd are playing similar to Liverpool in domination but are just inefficient. Its no surprise when we have like near the worst shot to goal ratio in the league since our dreadful run started in March. We deserve to win most games but struggle to win mainly due to shocking efficiency at both ends.

you do realise we will get into the xG CL if the table stays the same?
