Pretty Invincible Already

Evening lads

Just out of curiosity, I had a look back at the 03/04 and the 04/05 final league table and in particular at the Arsenal points haul.

That is widely considered to be one of the greatest Arsenal sides and perhaps one of the greatest English sides of all time.

Arsenal finished the 03/04 season with 90 points and the following year ended up on 83 points.

That’s:
• 76 games
• 51 wins
• 20 draws
• 5 defeats
• A grand total of 173 points.

If we compare that to Liverpool last season and the 22 games we’ve played this year, that works out at:
• 60 games
• 51 wins
• 8 draws
• 1 defeat
• A grand total of 161 points

Liverpool bettered Arsenals Invincible points tally albeit falling short in the title race and have matched Arsenals matches won over 2 seasons with 16 games of the season left to play.

I don’t think it’s a contentious point to say that this Liverpool side is better than the Arsenal Invincibles side and is performing with a higher win rate and over a longer period of time.

We’ve picked up 91 out of the last 93 points available. I don’t think we’ve seen a points return like that in English football.

People might say we didn’t win the title last season but I’d counter that by saying both City and Liverpool were better than Arsenal 03/04 side.

Liverpool may have lost a match back in January 2019 but let’s be honest, this team is probably more Invincible than the so called Invincibles.

Good Night lads

I agree with that shout.

I often thought that the Arsenal 01/02 side were just as good as the 03/04 one. Utd were in a bit of a transitional period post Becks, pre Rooney/good Ronaldo, whereas the 01/02 Utd side were expected to win the league again having just signed Veron.

When was the last time Liverpool played against a fully fit opposition team from the top 5 from last season? It seems when we they face one if these teams, their key players are injured. Lucky pool

Not that United are any kind of barometer, but Arsenal played us 4 times in their "invincible" season and didn't win once. Liverpool have to obviously go on and close that particular goal, if being "invincible" is a goal. I'd still expect them to be happy with being champions. Going on to retain the CL would be a far bigger dream than "invincibility" to most of their fans too imo. What do you guys say?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Absolutely right.

Going the season unbeaten would be nice, breaking the points record would be nice. Both pale into insignificance compared to retaining the CL.

I’d take the FA Cup over either of them as well.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You aren’t unbeaten though. Lost in Europe. Admittedly doing the league unbeaten would be a phenomenal achievement.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

well, in that case, arsenal aren't/weren't 'the invincibles' either. cos unless they've won some champions league trophy that no-one else in the world knows about, they lost in Europe as well.

Exactly, Arsenal knocked out of the champions league by Chelsea, fa cup by utd and league cup by Boro

Always thought if the bulk of the league is taking points off each other that is a strong league.

If a team can be top of that league it is a strong team, and if they are miles ahead, that's a Jurgen Klopp team at their peak.

Seems I'm right.
