Harry Maguire

What do we make of him so far?

My opinion is he’s been ok but nowhere near worth 85 million which we already knew.

Also, when he signed many said he’d improve our build up play as he has quality on the ball. He’s ok on the ball but too many times I see him misplace passes and give the ball away.

Another thing many said was he’d be a threat and presence in both boxes. We’ve conceded more from set pieces than anyone in the league and he’s when he has had goal scoring chances at crucial times he has fluffed his lines.

He was sort of a needless signing imo and now he’s our captain.

Suppose the one thing he does is stay fit unlike most of our defenders.

He is a mediocre defender and not better than Smalling or Bailly.

Ole has now made him the team captain

He's a very good defender. His historical and this season's performances evidence that, as do his figures.

He's certainly more useful than Bailly, who has spent almost half of the time he's been at United out injured. You can't build a team around a player like that.

And who would you have selected as captain?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

What figures are you talking about? We are conceding more goals since his acquisition. Regarding the captaincy, I would have given it to Rashford.

If he is to be a fixture in the starting team Maguire is probably the best candidate as Captain. Not many contenders.

Rashford for me, Maguire plays so much because of his price.

I've been far more impressed with AWB defensive abilities. Hope Bailly stays fit and gets game time

Yes, Rashford is a candidate. He should't be (yet).

Even McT could claim the armband.

Saw Bailly slope in the ground before the Newcastle game. Head down, hands in pockets hoodie covering his face ignoring the kids asking for autographs whilst others obliged.

Stinker of an attitude

I was a fan of Maguire before he signed for United - same with Di Maria, Pogba, Sanchez etc.

The coaching, tactics aren't getting the best out of the players as the bulk of them have remained stagnant or worse... regressed

-----------------------------------------------

This is an important point which doesn't get as much attention as it should.

Yes we've made some signings we shouldn't have done down the years for one reason or another but some people have a habit of saying they've all or most of them have been the wrong signings which with hindsight is the easy thing to do but it just excuses a number of issues that have plagued this club for years such as the poor level of coaching both tactically and technically and these are issues that still remain.

For so many players to fall by the wayside when they come to United suggests there's something fundamentally wrong within.

You bought Maguire hoping he could do what Van Dijk did
++

Only our more idiotic fans thought he could do that

Winston, please confirm?

The biggest issue is not that Maguire is bad in isolation, but that Utd for the past 7 years is going circles regarding finding the best partnership in defence. And this has alot to do with switching coaches too often. I believe the Blind/Smalling pairing was by far the best regarding defence and buildup play, but Mourinho didn't like the defensive weaknesses Blind has at times and sold him on to have 2 at the back who are better at defending but are crap in buildup play.

Which only works out well if you have a Pirlo-esque holding midfielder or someone like Busquets who drops deep to make plays from there. (Assuming you don't want to be forced to play hoofball at times).

Now you have Maguire who's not quite as good at build-up play as you would expect from an elite team (Real, Barca, Juve, Bayern, Liverpool, City all have unicorn-like defenders who are both very good at defending and passing) and Fred who's not good enough to carry both centre backs. Do you spunk another 150m on a CB and holding midfielder or do you try to spread out some responsibilities towards the fullbacks and other players?

What, honestly? Whom would you have been playing in Maguire’s place?

Bailly and TFM have been out all season. Tuanzebe has been out most of the season.

You’d honestly have been playing Jones or Rojo in front of Maguire?! Just bizarre.

It’s ridiculous to judge a single player on team goals conceded when we have three new players in the back line, two of whom are kids.

A few quick personal ones from whoscored:

- 4th CB in the league in aerials won per game
- 8th in interceptions
- 1st in key passes
- 9th in total passes
- 9th in accurate long passes (and one of only eight in the top twenty who hit more accurate (4.3/game) than inaccurate (3.1/game) long passes)

Do you think Rashford is an on-pitch leader? Would you want it to be him talking to the ref when things get heated?
