Preferred Starting XI

Given the incomings of Bruno/Ighalo and the loss of Rashford for who knows how long. How would you line up now until the end of the season?

This is how I predict Ole wants us to line up when McT and Pogba get fit (hopefully not too long after the break). Obviously it will be Fred and Matic until they are.

-------------------DDG
AWB---Lindelof---Maguire---Williams
-------------McT-----Pogba
Mata-----------Bruno-------Martial
------------------Ighalo

Ideally I would like a midfield 3 but with the same personnel.

He very rarely played against defences as rigid and disciplined as those that we see now

....

Did you watch a lot of football back then.

I wasn’t born

But I’ve watched a lot of football from that era, and read a lot about the tactical development of the game.

Most league sides were still using 3-3-4 and (latterly) 4-2-4 formations, in both cases with flying wingers stationed high up the pitch with scant defensive duties, when George was playing.

England’s wingless wonders started to change that, but we didn’t see the more disciplined and narrow 4-4-2 become the default in league football until the 70s.

Probably the formation which gets the most out of Bruno and Pogba in an attacking sense. McT isnt a holding player and shouldn't really be deployed there in a 433.

Cant be putting Ighalo straight into the starting line up yet really. Hes a complete unknown quantity.

I like Diafols diamond from earlier in the thread, at least with the players we have now.
It would depend on who we bought in the summer after that, get Sancho and it's all change.
Stretty with daft comment of the day.
George wouldn't be a footballer today.

Not Fred ? If you think McT. is superior to Fred and Matic, you are contributing to the decline of this great club. Just like those who believe Ole should be given time. Time to do what ? To covince us all of our mediocricy ?

Second daftest comment.
If you believe McT is better than Fred you are contributing to the decline of the cleb.

You are saying that teams were as well structured, well-drilled and well-disciplined defensively in the 1960s and early 1970s as they are now?

Our defense certainly was.

Our defense with Parker Bruce Pally and Irwin was way better than it has been for the last decade.

We could do a whole thread on the pros and cons of the modern and older game.

For example Lingard would be a fitter physical specimen than Best but there is no way he would have played for United back then.

If Best was a youngster in today’s game with an even better standard of fitness than he had then do you think he wouldn’t get in our current line up?

Give Dalot a run at rw. We need some width, and Ighalo needs crosses into the box.
