Pressing

An interesting article on the evolution towards the modern pressing style.

With more teams adopting the high press, you have to wonder how long will it last. In today's entainment age, this is what fans want to see and may stifle any attempts to combat pressing with more direct long ball tactics. Is pressing here to stay?

The first time I saw a Lobanovskyi team was when our country won the 1988 euros against his Sovjet Union team.

He was a revolutionary in the pressing tactics which was similar to the one Klopp adopted at Dortmund in his first years.

Teams should have a plan B for when the high press is preventing them getting out.

I’m too young to remember the evolution of the game over the 70s and 80s but I’m sure the Liverpool side of that era where known for their pressing game. What changed back then to overcome it?

The press exists today because it’s seen as a way to overcome tactics that have existed before it, so it makes sense that managers will soon be looking into ways of taking advantage of weaknesses in the pressing game.

I think Liverpool's team got old towards the end of the 80s. I always thought them to be a pragmatic team (barring their vintage 1988 year) during their successful years but a very powerful and talented one. The
fact you could backpasss rule helped them a lot too.

There will probably be a tactic to overcome the press that becomes all the rage. Maybe the Hughes direct football 442 will be it.

Pressing teams play a high line, so pace up front does cause them problems. But you need players that can hit accurate long passes.

Hit it into the corner and it's a race between 2 or 3 forwards and a CB or 2.

With their full backs pushing up, there is space out wide to hit. But you still need players that can hit those balls.

Only needs to be put into the space. Shouldnt be beyond most defenders or midfielders.

playing hoofball doesn't break a press. it just creates a 50/50 and a good press will rush the hoof.

long ball doesn't work unless you are good enough to create the space to pick a pass out. lfc play long passes to break massed defences. try get ball over top.

simple stuff. switch from one side to the other for space, ball in channel, ball in behind. it's all about beating first line to have space to.pick the ball.

A long pass isnt a hoof.

And any good GK or CB can play a long pass

there is a very effective plan B
but not all teams can use it

the plan B requires a top cm with incredible passing and good forwards

the best example I can think of this was bayern vs madrid in April 2014. Going into the game bayern had become the pass masters under pep and seemingly the best team in the world. Like all pep's they played high press and dominated possession.
Many had not given madrid a chance as the seemingly could not compete. To make matters worse Ancelloti played alonso, modric, and adm in midfield.
I remember everyone thinking how on earth were those 3 suppose to contain the high intensity of pep's bayern at the time or recover the ball.

madrid won that game 4-0 with 30%possession and it was not luck but a masterclass. A master class in passing by modric and alonso who released madrids attackers with super passes every time bayern lost the ball.
