MK Dons

Not really Leicester City related, but a quick winter break talking point to open to discussion.

MK Dons was formed over 15 years ago now, but remains the subject of much debate and sometimes anger over its origins. What I thought I'd throw out there is: What do people make of it all now, considering the time that's passed and the fact that AFC Wimbledon have grown to become a football league club in their own right (in the same division, no less).

This in mind, I present to you a star rating system:

5*: Not only did I not shed a tear but a better club came out of it all.
4*: That's capitalism for you. The whole thing has never really bothered me.
3*: It probably shouldn't have happened but it did and I have nothing against them.
2*: What happened to Wimbledon was a disgrace. I dislike the new club but accept their existence.
1*: Can't stand them. If the club folded tomorrow, I'd celebrate.

It's worth noting that, in recent years, Wasps in Rugby Union have done something similar in relocating to Coventry and then claiming a local rivalry with Leicester Tigers. I wonder whether the same feelings prevail over that for those who have an interest in the sport.

At the beginning you had to pretend you were the same club to keep your league place though.

One star for me - I hate everything about the way this club was set up. They basically saw an opportunity and pounced - very much like vultures over a carcass. How on earth MK Dons we’re allowed to start in the English 4th tier of football is beyond me.

I’ve been to the ground - it’s awful. No atmosphere and most of the fans aren’t really that interested in football

They should get some clappers to create one like you guys

Joking aside they get around 9-10k around 4th highest in the league.

Yeah but it’s like a library - it’s only the away fans that make any noise. Half the people there support other teams (like Spurs) because it’s such a new club with no history

6* Dunge really needs a winter break.

MkSpurs Why are your match day threads closed to anyone whom is not a Spurs fan? Not that I am wanting to comment but without the live thread you can not read all the comments without keep refreshing!

Not really there’s a section (maybe 2k) that make decent noise as for away fans bar the big clubs like Sunderland lucky to get 100 away fans turn up.

Rochdale bough 10 the other night. It’s league one atmospheres are shiet in most stadium ( actually English football is shiet nowadays for atmosphere ).

One of the best atmosphere I’ve been to was when mk best united. Quality.

As you say though this generation are many solely MK but the next will have more and so on.

No! Stealing a club’s identity was against everything football stands for in this country from a fans’ perspective. Rather than just hand the honours back I would have liked to see them renounce their place in the league and then work their way back. Maybe then you’d have to begrudgingly accept them. Still wouldn’t atone for what Wimbledon fans had to do to rebuild their club from scratch.

I haven’t been to their stadium so can’t comment on the atmosphere. What I do know is that 10k is only a fraction of the stadium’s capacity. I’ve never been to a half full stadium that has even a half decent atmosphere.

^^^ actually, correction on that.

I should say half full “modern” stadium.

I’ve been to quite a few games with brilliant atmospheres in partially full stadiums, but they were all in the standing up days at old grounds - including Filbert Street.

1.5 for me Dunge. I still find it a constant irritation, I always look to see how the respective clubs have got on. It was good earlier in the season when they were struggling, looking more like relegation candidates and standing below Wimbledon, but they've picked up now and unfortunately it looks like the situation is reversed.

I probably don't wish them to go out of existence but dropping out of the football league would give the authorities and any owners considering the same thing again pause for thought perhaps.

Having said which I have been to their stadium on my tours around the grounds to watch an MK Dons match and found it fine, I enjoyed my day out. I spoke to one of the locals about the ongoing furore, he just wanted to move on as it was history and look to the future.

If the club wanted to avoid controversy and just look ahead, even now it could simply signal this by dropping the 'Dons' for something else more suitable to MK. Otherwise it's a constant reminder of the past.
