Mike Phelan

Away from all the Ole in/out/give him time debate, let’s talk about Mike Phelan - is there a more useless man at our club? (Actually, probably a few but he’s still pretty useless)

I remember when he was SAFs assistant during the later years and the stick he got. Last night when we were losing there was a shot of him on the bench and he looked like he would rather be at home watching fishing videos or something else other than offering any tactical advice whatsoever.

Anyone else think that Phelan may as well be replaced by a Doberman? At least then we might see some energy on the sideline.

I would think Mike Phelan is the least of your problems right now

Robb reckons poch and a budget office’s 15bn on transfers should sort us out.

Tbf it would 🤣

I've said before he was a poor choice imo. We played gung-ho with Kidd, the same but better with McClaren, and pro our best football with Queiroz. If Ole gets the job next season, he needs to get rid and find someone better.

Maybe we could get poch as no2. That would keep robb happy

If he had a nice head of hair a lot more of you would like the man as a coach, but it's the never-ending persecution of the follically challenged in force here. Will it never end?

The same phelan that was being lauded as a tactical master in ole’s initial run of games?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Was he? What’s come since hasn’t exactly backed up those claims
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s a bit like the much vaunted poch, didn’t exactly back you the claims he was a top coach when he oversaw them go into Freefall before being sacked?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is this even English?

I dont think a single one of us has the slightest idea how good or bad he is.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

We have some evidence to suggest he’s pretty bad.

Fergie used to delegate and observe training, not actually take the sessions him self.

We went from flamboyant football under Carlos as assistant, to some very turgid stuff under Phelan. We didn’t play great football in 2013, we relied upon individual genius most of the time.

Personally I think if Ole wants to stay in the job, he needs an assistant who understands modern football. It’s clear that his man management is particularly good because of the way everybody plays for him, nobody has downed tools and it’s been a schit season. He needs a great assistant to supplement his other managerial skills.

We also have a coach called Mark Dempsey who worked with Ole before. He's almost the same age as Phelan, and kinda looks like him. Can't see Ole appointing a new head coach, and getting rid of one of these guys.

This isn't strictly true tho... At least in it being an assistant fault

Carlos took plenty of flak early on for being more defensive than we were used to

The flamboyance... Mmm... A lot of that was Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez as a front 3

The flamboyance ended with Ronaldo leaving and replacing him with Valencia... While after Carlos left and during Phelans time i doubt he was picking transfers
