The Wayne Rooney Show

We weren’t sure what we were going to get with Rooney. We feared it would be a circus or that he might be past it and just having a final big pay day at our expense. That he would be targeted, lose his rag and get a few red cards.

Wow. What a joy to watch at first hand an absolute master of his craft. You get a sense of it on TV but when you are there you see much more. It seems daft to say it but despite taking all the set pieces and being at the centre of all of the action he doesn’t court attention. No histrionics, no over-celebrations when he scores, not even a yellow card, absolute maturity in every aspect of his game.

Some fans have always carped about Rooney, they say he’s over-rated and try to diminish his achievements in the game, rather than ignoring their preconceptions and prejudices and celebrating one of the greatest players this country has produced. He’s lost his speed of course but he has gained the ability to organise, encourage and he gets much of the credit for the blossoming of Bird and greater consistency of others like Lawrence and Waghorn. He’s a fabulous captain.

But it’s his technique which takes your breath away. The touch, the awareness, the fact he seems to have three seconds more to do everything than any other player. Even his simple passes are absolute perfection of direction and weight to allow the target to take the ball in his stride and his long passes are almost invariably onto a sixpence.

Get yourselves down there as often as you can to see this man in the flesh. He won’t be here for ever and we may never see a better player in a Derby shirt.

Shelton should also be on the lists of legends.

And if we're having Charlie George, then let's not forget Nish too. This is one of my earliest football memories:

The rams breaking up an attack and one of the centre-backs lays a square ball to Nish on the left. George is already in motion, that lopeing run of his, tracking along the defensive line towards the left touchline. As Nish hits a 40 yard pass George curves his run and heads for goal. He doesn't even need to look. The ball comes directly over his shoulder, into his stride, so he doesn't have to slow at all, opposition offside trap looking foolish.

Great days.

I do wonder if there'll be a trend of top class players playing out there last few years in the Championship.

So many anti football teams a la Forest, in this league though, just set up to stop you from playing whereas the MLS you do get space to express yourself, not sure about the Chinese league haven't had a chance to check it out.

What rubbish, QPR had a lot more to do to score. What were Davies, Lowe and Hamer doing?.....Not a lot.
