Coronavirus impact on sports

In the last week I've had 7 prospects pull out of joining our programmes.

The latest citing the fact that someone at his temple in Watford had been tested and I live in Croxley Green nearby, so he shouldn't come to tennis lessons to protect us both.

Utter irrational panic.

However, this panic is driving decision making at the highest level with a substantial portion of Italy supposedly quarantined and now a major sporting event - Indian Wells being cancelled.

There is a much wider impact here than just the event being cancelled, but if you just focus in on that, you can see huge problems ahead for teams.

Talk of football matches behind closed doors is already happening and it's entirely feasible that happened in UK before the end of the season.

Clubs will lose substantial revenue streams and experience cash flow issues if suddenly no fans allowed in stadia.

Insurance may or may not kick in, if it does then there will be disputes over amounts to be paid out and that will take time, clubs will still be left with cashflow problems.

Will players take pay cuts during this to do their bit to help ease the situation? Will the football authorities provide some funding to assist clubs in finical trouble.

What will happen to companies owning stadia, such as Wembley that could well see weeks worth of profitable events cancelled?

I'm not scared of the virus, but am scared about the impact of the overreactions to it.

The testing is not about stopping the spread, its about understanding the how and why about the spread so that a strategy can be drawn up to address it.

It's not about testing every single person. there is simply not the capability for that, the advice at present is that if you think you have symptoms, it's to self isolate, not to be tested.

This will affect far more than 20% of workforce at any one time.

It would be preferable if we had south korea levels of testing, as take for example if we knew Nadine and X other Mps were positive and the rest negative, then parliament can function with those MPs isolated. No blanket Westminster testing means we have no idea who else in the chamber may or may not be infected. Thus increasing the risk of far more infections.

Korea's testing is more than 10 times the level of ours at present.

The trouble with the testing is that it is only reliable once symptoms have appeared, the virus has to reproduce to be detectable as its the replication that kills cells and its the dead cells that the test looks for.

I am imagine getting tested negative is a pretty good thing. I tend to listen to R4 when I want to hear information. They often have experts on there giving good advice.

Tested negative today doesn’t stop you catching it tomorrow

I know doctors are having to stop working and waiting x days on test results. If negative at least they can go back to work. No test means they'd likely be off for a fortnight, when they are really needed

But it would allow you to say stop self isolating and continue working etc.

Not if someone else tests positive and they then decide to send everyone home!

The US, have hardly done any testing of population and now look at what's happening there, NBA cancelled, European flights cancelled for 30 days.
