Well said Don, It is the one thing I really detest, is where the modern generation of supporters just dismissing anything that went before as being inferior. It wasn`t.

Some of the modern goalies for a start, need to take a lesson in how to be a goalie from some of the oldies. I have never seen so many basic errors from goalies as in the modern age.

It wasn’t Don.........it was me!😳

You see people’s lists.... Rooney, Kane, Owen, Fowler, Shearer, Cole........ and then wonder how on earth England were such an abject failure for the most part of the PL era

I accept you get some enigmas like greeves and Romario that were known as bad trainers, but without undermining their ability, the pace of today's game would be way to much for jimmy. Exceptional player for his time though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That`s like saying would Aguero be able to play in ankle deep mud, with a ball that weighed a ton, and boots that were not very light.

Aguero versus Jimmy in the 1950s/60s would be amusing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're probably right. He would struggle playing on pitches like the moon but my point with greaves is the fact he had immense natural ability but wasn't a strong trainer, going by stories I've heard and jokes told by former players

In today's games greaves and the Romario 's probably wouldn't get away with their antics. Clubs don't tolerate it. I said they were great players for sure but do you think Jose would let jimmy skip training to clean his rolls Royce πŸ˜…

Dif times are impossible to compare. I genuinely think players like Lee Trundle would've been amazing back in the day. Plenty others I think would make the transition to the modern pl, and some from the recent era, visa versa. I just think jimmy a bad example, and that's no slight on his immense natural ability.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

If Jimmy was playing in the modern age, then he would abide by the modern rules.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes strikers like Jimmy Greaves had to contend with heavy boots stuck in mud, but so did the defenders trying to stop him.

Aguero & Co. have athletes in running shoes closing them down.

Tackling almost outlawed, so modern players get away with hardly any physical contact. Players from eras in the 20th century had acts of brutality on them on a regular basis, it was the norm.

Greaves had players kicking lumps out him all the time, in those days it was accepted that defenders were allowed a couple of chances to put a player into the stands. His quick thinking and natural pace kept him safe mostly.
I think we are being quite disdainful of players from the past and them not being great trainers. Greaves was always fit at whatever level he played at, you don’t become a record goal scorer by not being fit.

Greaves would only score 5-10 a season nowadays

But he is 80

Sorry..........old joke!

The only issue I had with freezes is the fact it's well documented he wasn't the best trainer and the most modest professional. Not all of them old school players were like that, neither did I suggest as much.

Ive always found the stories funny really and recognise the guys immense talent but my main issues are
A) if u train badly you don't play nowadays irrespective of how good you are
B) he was an out and out goalscorer, which are rare nowadays. In the modern game more is expected of a striker. Again that's not criticism, just a sign of the times.

Imo I see greeves like Romario, fowler etc. Immense natural ability.
