Besty

I hear a lot that George best was an absolute gem of a player. People say that they would put him in the same category as pele and Maradona but his playing career was short so people actually didn't get to see what else he would have go on to do.
If so how good was he and where would you rank him in football would he be on your top 10

90% of the people who say that Ronaldo and Messi are the GAOT have actually never seen them play live. Just on TV. Not the same.

Footballers from previous generations were not televised much, or if at all.

Example. what you see of Best in Youtube clips is probably less than 10% of his actual playing time in his whole career. The things you see him do he did on a regular basis, week in and week out and on many weeks even better, but their is no recorded evidence of it all. All you can do is listen to what those who saw it live have to say and take their word for it. The same goes for the likes of Greaves, Charlton, Pele, Eusebio, Matthews, Edwards, Finney etc.

This is why comparing different generations of players as the GOAT is pretty pointless.

Seen Ronaldo twice live but never Messi. The first time o saw Ronaldo I was absolutely stunned. Obviously when you see him on the box he looks good, but to see it at close quarters in real time I was absolutely blown away by him.

I do still think though that whilst defenders got away with far more and pitches were definitely sub par, it was the same for everyone playing and nobody ever got close to the goals records Messi and Ronaldo have for as long. And it isn't like it was impossible, with Dixie Dean being able to smash 60 in a top flight season back in the 30s, and players like Pele and Jimmy Greaves scoring a good number everywhere they went.

I honestly believe the current two are light years ahead of anything seen before.

George was a winger, and then you mainly stayed out wide.

Yeah, that is a fair point 52, and probably another reason why it's so hard to compare the current two to those of the past conclusively as so much has moved on, not least the fluidity of tactics these days compared to the rigid old formations.

I would loved to have seen Best in his pomp. My dad won't hear a bad word said about either him or Rodney Marsh, who he still maintains are the two most gifted players to ever walk the earth. I can still remember a goal I saw of Bests when I was younger...ball comes out to him at the edge of the area, takes one touch on his chest to control it, then just deftly lobs it back over everyone's head. There doesn't even seem to be the room for it to dip into the net, but dip in it does, proper eye of the needle stuff. Obviously this is all done whilst everyone is caked in 5lbs of mud as well 😂

vs Spurs in the Stretford End which was closed behind the goal as punishment for previous United crowd aggro.

Ahh nice one. That's the one though I have obviously mixed up another muddy game with that one. Plenty of links from that video so I can see me disappearing down a George Best rabbit hole for the next hour or too now!

KK, very high, less talent but dynamic. Not the best Liverpool player I've seen though, that was Kenny. I can't do à list of them in order, and it's all opinion.
I would probably put Ronaldo at No2 based one game at OT
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Where would you rate the likes of Zico, Socrates and Garrincha?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And McGrath’
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Great player McGrath was sorry to see him go but he had his problems injury wise and personal. Fergie was implementing cultural changes at that time so Paul unfortunately had to be sacrificed.

He was a raging alcoholic but what a defender. Just watch his performance in USA 94 when up against Baggio.
Also remember his partner that day was Phil Babb!!!

He was part of the drinking culture at united along with Robson and Whiteside. There were always rumors Robson was not kicked out as he was England captain at the time.

Also apparently Dalglish wanted to sign McGrath for Liverpool and he was reported to have said he would walk to Anfield to sign. Obviously that was never going to happen.

He had a tough upbringing in Dublin

Oh, ah Paul McGrath

You are spot on regarding McGrath, Whiteside from the Shankill area, and Robson being the A-team drinkers there, who could do ten pints plus etc compared to teammates...in the B team lol.

Is it true McGrath did not train much, due to his cricket knee?

Can see that goal in my head.

Only saw Best play once live, for San Jose Earthquakes, in a friendly at Windsor park, again st an NI select

Think besty played for NI team second half.

He was past his best...missed him playing for Norn Iron sadly.

Was there rumours or talk about him making the squad for the world cup in 1982 ?

Yes he had knees of glass.

While at Villa the club warned all local pubs and off licenses not to sell alcohol to him.

McGrath used to drive the youth players to training and get them to get his booze
