Was he the greatest English man manager

we ever saw? Watching the Euro 96 docu and the glowing references from players for El-Tel speaks volume.

I think Spurs won the FA Cup under him in 1991.

Where would you rank Bobby Robson?

Greatest managers in my lifetime in no particular order:

Brian Clough, took a 2nd division side to the the title and two European Cups, over the space of four seasons.

Billy Nicholson, took a team that finished 18th in the 1st division to the Double within two seasons.

Bill Shankly, took Liverpool from the 2nd division to the title within three seasons.

Matt Busby, took Man United from the wreckage of Munich to FA Cup, 1st Division Title, European Cup win over the space of a few seasons.

Alf Ramsay, took Ipswich from the 3rd division to the 1st division Title over the space of five seasons. Oh and won England their only world cup.

Ferguson isn't in your greatest managers list in your lifetime?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

No mate, because basically he had everything going for him, untold money to buy all the best players over a period of many years. If you were judging him on the sort of period the managers I have said were the best, he would have probably been sacked, before all the titles started to come in.

I like Fergie a lot, but like a lot of the modern chequebook managers, he more or less had a free run on winning multiple trophies. The Prem era has basically brought the era similar to the early Victorian days, where only three or four clubs won most of the trophies.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well he proved his abilities weren't all about money with what he did before United at Aberdeen. In any case it takes a special manager to remain at the top of his game for so long and keep being successful for 20 years at one club, whilst the league evolves and his own team does. That requires more than shed loads of cash. Look at the likes of Mourinho and Wenger...past it after 10 years at the top.

Fergie is the best manager of all time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

As I said I liked Fergie a lot, but he managed in an era where only very few clubs had any chance of winning trophies. United being one of them.

All the manager I put down were mostly from an era where competition was very, very fierce. No back to back title winners in the 1960s, and only Spurs did back to back cups over the same period. Each year basically a different winner of the domestic trophies. Not like the modern game, where it is relatively easy to do back to back stuff, and win doubles.

How many clubs are in with a serious chance of winning the league next season? Probably two.

It was our last FA Cup win. As a Spurs fan you should KNOW this

You talk about winning back to back titles like they're an easy thing to accomplish these days. Only ever been 3 managers to have done it in the PL and that's Fergie, Mourinho and Pep...the 3 greatest managers of the modern era. Fergie managed to do it at 3 different times which shows how good he was.

Winning back to back titles was almost impossible in the 1960s, so winning three back to back shows how much easier it has become for the modern managers, in a not so competitive league. Fergie basically only had Arsenal to worry about for the first 10 years of the Prem, then Mourinho for the next 10 years, and then City. Over a period of nearly 30 years, he had so little competition, that is why he was able to win 13 titles.

Yet just the decade before in the 50's United defended a title followed by Wolves defending a title. So it did happen. Happened in the 40's too with Portsmouth.

Defending a title is never going to be easy, back then or now. City had to defend their title by reaching 98 points last season, that's how tough it was.

I get that you have nostalgic goggles on but you're definitely doing a modern day manager like Fergie a huge injustice here. His success in the English game has been unparalleled before or since. He should be the first name mentioned in any list of great managers not excluded entirely.

You think Spurs won the FA cup under Venables. What's the matter? No time to google it? LOL.

I’m with Spurtle, Fergie is the greatest manager of all time. I hated him growing up, but nobody can dismiss what a stunning job he did at United. They haven’t been the same as a club since his departure and that just goes to show what a massive influence he had. Those managers Sandy mentioned are all fantastic in their own right, but they don’t even come close to Alex Ferguson and his achievements. To have Manchester United as a domineering force for so long was extraordinary. Best manager of all time by a country mile.

Isn’t the list for English manager.

Not sure how Fergie or Busby can be on a list that has Clough and Venables and Sir Bobby Robson.
