Jack Grealish

The Times are saying he's expected to join United this summer, And he'll add competition to our midfield as well.

We like improving the midfield without actually improving the midfield.

This

That's complete nonsense. We went from Scholes and Carrick, to Carrick and Fletcher, to Carrick and Fellaini, to Fellaini and Shneiderlin, to Fellaini and Schweinsteiger, to Fellaini and Herrera... actually, you might be on to something...

He doesn't play in midfield for Villa though
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This. This. And this.

He just doesn't fit at United as we stand and as he plays.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He plays either left of a front 3 or at number 10. 2 positions that are contained in the 4-2-3-1 Ole uses. Don’t see how he doesn’t fit it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t want to put words in TRC’s mouth, but is he hinting at the fact that we already have Rashford and Bruno locked in in the positions that Grealish plays?

Thanks, Rosso.

I am just lazy in elaborating further as I have done so in a few other threads on this 'Grealish to United talk'.

All the positions Grealish covers/plays best are occupied by our best players.

I think a deep-lying CM player is what we need most in midfield really. And of course, that right-sided player ( Sancho is ideal rn but is pricy).

Even if Pogba leaves, the needs are still the same though it'd make a bit more sense then to have Grealish in.

I have to state this, I like Grealish as a player. The way he strolls around the pitch, is obviously technically adept and a hard worker but as we stand right now, with the playing personnel we have and under Ole's MO, Grealish is not an ideal purchase.

I’m with you 100%

I’ve heard the squad depth/competition arguments, which hold *some* weight, but we’re not in the luxury position of being able to add high-quality options to bench warm until we’ve strengthened other key areas IMO.

I mean, if Grealish arrived tomorrow, would he be a guaranteed starter? And there are positions we really need to focus on, two of which you’ve mentioned. And I’d add a CB and CF before another attacking mid/left winger.

I look at teams like Barca, Bayern, City, PSG and see they have competition for every position.

It may not be a priority, but an injury to any of Pogba, Rashford, Fernandes currently leaves us short.

CM we lack quality, but not quantity.

Add a versatile player like Grealish across the offensive midfield roles (yes he can play CAM/ 10 very well too), and sign Ighalo then we have options.

Maybe not a priority but still, he has a high ceiling and Pogba may well leave.

Choices are already great in midfield and Grealish will definitely strengthen

Selecting from Mata, Pogba (fingers crossed), Fred, Fernandez, James, Matic and or Grealish is actually quite reasonable.

Could been more adventurous if a genuine left-wing choice is added.

Seems the perennial problem of centre forward/striker is the main issue, and Maguire and Jones can't carry, season long, centre back duties on their own. Better than baillly and lindelof are musts.

There won't be any big money transfers this summer. Coronavirus has more or less wiped out players moving for a year or two.

No I totally get that but the point I’m making is that we don’t have any real quality competition in either position.

If Bruno gets a long term injury do we go back to Lingard, Pereira or Mata who are not good enough.

If Rashford gets another injury then we only really have James as back who again isn’t really top quality.

Rashford has this injury from being overplayed as we have no one else on his level.

Grealish could also be a better option than Rashford in certain games where the opposition sits deep.

Where does he play for Villa? When I’ve seen them he seems to have a pretty fluid free role, much like what Fernandes settled into in our last few games.

He isnt a defender or a forward. He is an offensive minded midfielder.

Matic, McTominay, Fred are the defensive minded players

Pogba and Fernandes are the offensively minded midfielders.

Mata, Lingard and Periera aren’t good enough.

An offensively minded midfielder isn’t therefore a luxury. Especially given the uncertainty around Pogbas future.
