Belgian league cancelled/ Bruges champions

The Belgian Pro League is set to become the first major European league to be cancelled because of coronavirus.

Club Bruges will be declared champions with the current league table set to stand.

There was one match of the regular season remaining when the league was suspended, with play-offs due to decide the top positions.

The league’s board of directors made the decision and have made a recommendation to the general assembly.

It will be made official on 15 April with a working group to decide relegation and promotion issues.

Club Brugge are 15 points clear of second-placed Gent at the top of the table.

First one to call it a day.

With a game to play a potentially 3 play off games, they've shot their bolt rather early i'd say.

You can't just stop and start football like a car. Especially with no concrete date in mind.

This will provide closure for Belgian clubs and fans, and will give all stakeholders the freedom to start afresh when all this is over.

Our dithering can only go on for so long before clubs start running into difficulties because they still have their money tied up contractually. Won't be long before both Sky and the FA start getting desperate phone calls from club chairmen.

Different parts of the country will also recover at different rates, with the major metropolitan populations expected to recover last. Good luck trying to police an Arsenal-Liverpool game held behind closed doors.

I kinda agree although with 1 league game and then 2 SFs and a playoff final, that could be done in 2 weeks total

It's different for the bigger leagues who still have 1/4 of the season left to play

Belgian League play offs are a 6 team league in which every team plays each other home and away, so they've pretty much just finished the season 11 games early.

woh, so you could come 6 in a 16 team league and end up being champions

From what I've read what they've done here almost seems fairer than the play-off system they had in place!

The EU just cancelled an environmental meet in November, no football anytime soon.

November?

If this goes to next year will we have a league to come back to? How many clubs will survive? We will have to start afresh. https://www.ja606.co.uk/articles/viewArticle/420470
