So yet again the government shows its true colours, after all the plaudits being poured, quite rightly onto our wonderful NHS and all its servants, the government have ‘mandated’ that the upcoming Bank holiday’s of Friday and Monday be treated as ‘normal’ working days, paid at ‘FLAT RATE’, yes the days will be granted later in the year, but that is not the point. The Civil service, Police and nearly all other organisations still working are being paid ‘time and a half’ as a minimum. Come on HMG at least pay the appropriate rate, these folks are risking their lives on an hourly basis, surely they deserve to be rewarded accordingly, they are certainly more important than our pen pushing civil servants.

Kunta, I don’t think those criticisms are mutually exclusive. Protecting the economy is a vague term as there are limits to it. Like you said there needs to be a balance.

The last thing this world needs at the moment are for the likes of Bezoz, Gates, Branson, Zuchenburg etc etc taking more and more money out of the economy to build up their personal wealth in some narcissistic race to the bottom. Same goes for companies like amazon, Starbucks etc not paying their taxes this negatively impacting on our public purse and our ability to adequately fund our public services
It is this selfish free market economy that has led to our front lineNHS staff going without PPE FFS so please excuse me for not crying a tear for our poor old economy!
It is not fit for purpose and this pandemic has proven that
----------------------------------------------------------------------
PPE procurement had nothing to do with the UK's economic model
It was a result of poor health governance, and failure to implement pandemic controls/measures as recomended by the Health and Social Care Committee a few years ago.
And more recently the UK government declining to avail of bulk/cheap PPE procurement via the EU PPE procurement scheme, as they chose to implement the herd immunity system instead.

It is down to this government, under their free market and neoliberalism ideals, starving the NHS of the moneys they required whilst carrying out their austerity measures! The same austerity, or starving of services, that is at the heart of neo liberalism

This lazy argument of ‘lives can’t come back, but the economy can’. That’s exactly why you need to consider the economy. Lives will be lost if it’s shot. The most vulnerable in society will be the most loaded with further chronic health and social problems. Don’t disagree with the premise of the article but tired of reading quite short sighted, simplistic posts from those who think they’re on a moral high ground about how you the economy doesn’t matter, saving lives does. That’s just now how it works. You need to think about both sides, if you care about lives lost.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course “the economy” matters, but “this economy” that we have is only 40 years or so old and it is lunacy to say the world will collapse if it cannot cope. We should change our whole economic system to one that can cope if the current one cannot
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What new economic model do you have in mind?
How would your model cater for the manufacturing industry (aviation and motor for example)?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well if something does not work then you look back in history to what did work at particular points in time. We have had economies that have survived world wars, pandemics, famine and disease in the past so it can be done. If it cannot be done under the current system then it is the current system that has failed
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The current system of making cars for example. If the sector is effectively shut down for months on end, how could the economic impact be mitigated, (other than the measures already in place to protect jobs)?

People need to understand that there was an economy before Maggie thatcher and Ronald Reagan got together and decided to privatise everything for the benefit of the few and to the detriment of the many

Nissan didn't move to Sunderland until the mid 80s.
Joking aside it too about 30 years for the global economy to recover.

The NHS workers will be suitably rewarded no question about that - but the priority right now is keeping the country from economically folding entirely during a time when everyone is under a national lockdown. This is the biggest crisis since WW2 - hardly the time to be scoring party political points on behalf of the Labour Party
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The priority should be saving lives and if the economy cannot cope with the current situation then it is simply not fit for purpose. Our economy has got through world wars, famine and disease and if this economy cannot cope then we should revert to one that can
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’d love to hear about an economy that can thrive during a nationwide lockdown where everyone has to stay at home. Please go on....

Ed Balls signed off the final payment of the WW2 debt the UK owed to the USA and Canada in 2006 - 61 years after the end of the war. This debt will take decades to repay
