FIFA extend season indefinitely

So it looks like FIFA have decided to extend the season indefinitely across the world to allow nations to complete their competitions. This includes altering the dates of the transfer window and allowing contract extensions until the end of the season.

This coupled with UEFA lifting the Saturday 3pm blackout the other day shows how dedicated everyone is to finishing things off.

Safety is of course paramount and it looks as though the number of cases are starting to slow down. Let's hope this continues to the extent that it is safe to play football in some capacity sooner rather than later.

Hope everyone is staying safe and haven't gone crazy with boredom yet!

Of course it’s massively different. You don’t have as many players transferring in January as you do in the summer as contracts don’t end in January.

The differences in the make up of a squad are marginal by comparison. In the event that it ends up playing out as discussed, you may see teams changing half their squad to finish the last ten games.

Unlikely for most premier league clubs, but certainly a reality for a lot of financially weaker clubs that see a far higher turnover of players in a summer window. Comparing it to the January transfer window is idiotic.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Is it possible for a club to change half their team in the january transfer window? If it is then it's no different there is absolutely no restriction on a team finishing the season with a different squad than they started the season with.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The big difference is this is unplanned. Teams will have players on contracts for this season, loans etc, all done on a budget from July 1st 2019 to June 30th 2020. You dont get players contracts ending in January usually.
I looked at Swindon and they have 21 players out of contract on June 30th. That is very different to January.

The top leagues wont have that much of an issue, I'm sure. But you cant just dismiss the rest.

And there’s clearly a difference when you consider that there is a restriction on finishing the season with a different group of players with ten games to go. That’s why we even have a transfer window.

Why? All those players will have the option of an extended contract. If they choose not to accept it then it frees up a space and their wage for Swindon to get a replacement in. Precisely as they would have done if it happened in a normal season.

Sure there are going to be financial difficulties for some clubs, but those difficulties are going to be there anyway and not extending the season is likely to compound them because it means even less income than if the season continues.

Apparently the CL may be abandoned if it can't be done by August.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Really? Where did you hear about that bud? Not sure I agree with it, because surely everyone wants a conclusion to the competition. Does that mean if it is abandoned that we're still Super European World champions? 😎

Came straight from the UEFA president's mouth!

You can get in players on less wages than the players you already have.
You can also reduce the number of players you have.

But not if you are forced to extend contracts a few months.

Where are you getting that they will be forced to extend contracts? The link in the op says they will be able to extend.

The Athletic article (or the part that can be seen for free) says contact extensions will be permitted.
