Are left backs better than right backs?

It may be in my head, but left backs are generally viewed in a better light than right backs. This is not to say the likes of Cafu, Thuram, Zanetti and Gary Neville aren't well thought of. It just seems as if the number of left backs rated at the higher levels are greater than right backs.
When we do "best XIs" on here it always seems as if the left back choices are plenty, whereas the right back is almost a "he will do" option.

Overall there always has been a bit of added myth to left footers in all positions. A long pass is always more special if it is by a "wand of a left foot" rather than the more basic right footer.

Obviously at the moment Liverpool have strength in both roles, while United seemingly have a better right back than left back. But look beyond now and back at the past.

Is there a bit of discrimination against right backs? Or are left backs just better?

Could it be because lefties are rarer, meaning that LBs get more game time in their preferred position for longer? A young RB might get shifted around the pitch, an out-of-form RB in the first team might be replaced by a midfielder or CB. But if a manager is set on having a leftie there his choices will be limited. More playing time = better development, a spot in the national team, and more awareness among fans.

Possibly. A few right footers have broken through by learning to play on the left, to add support to your thoughts.
Gael Clichy is actually right footed naturally, but wastrained from a young age to be more than comfortable on the left. Got him a few titles.

Hm. I never knew that. Every day's a school day.

The highest standard I ever played was as a left back. Not because I was left footed but because I was very good with it and no one else on their books could pass the ball ten yards with their weaker foot.

Some of the more gifted among us are equally capable with both feet

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous

I think it could possibly be that there's many good RBs but not as many good LBs.

This creates a dearth of choice for RBs and its hard to obtain consensus on who is the best. I feel there's less options for LB and this makes or an easier choice.

For instance, a current PL 11 would have more choice at RB than LB and that's often the case in football IMO.

Left footed players tend to be more talented (I'm left footed) than right footed ones.

That's why there are so few of us around

Oh, sorry. Didn't know that if it was posted on the Liverpool board then the only team you can talk about is Liverpool

Are LB's viewed better than RB's? Don't think so

I do agree that having a left foot elevates that foot to a 'wand' for some reason
