Breaking bad

Hi all, hope everyone is staying safe. As I am currently furloughed and find myself with lots of time on my hands like many others I suspect, I have decided to finally give breaking bad a go seeing as everyone at work raves about it. I have watched the first 4 from series 1 and I’m really not getting it? Is it just me? Do I persevere or sack it off? I’m not feeling the characters, is it supposed to be serious or dark humour. It is leaving me cold, opinions welcome.

Actually, Oz kicked the door open for Sopranos to exist
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I never said it didn't

but Oz due to its extreme violence and grittiness had niche following, it proved a story arc model, but without the sopranos ability to attract the wider audience shows like Oz would've always been niche, just like the shield or sons of anarchy

for me personally the wire and the sopranos are the two greatest tv shows I've ever watched.

They brought me into their depressing worlds and while the sopranos in particularly had a couple of bad seasons, it was truly magnificent cinema.

the one thing I think he modern generation maybe don't appreciate is judging them in the time they came out.

When the Sopranos came out the top 10 tv shows by audience were who wants to be a millionaire, ER, Friends, Frasier, Touched by an Angel, Everybody loves Raymond, Becker, judging Amy, Law & Order, The Practice, Dharma & Greg.

we didn't have TV shows that had main arcs that ran a season, with blockbuster casts, serious gritty topics, foul language.

many of the modern shows that many of us love like Game of thrones, breaking bad, better call Saul, true detective etc owe a lot of their existence to these 2 paving the way for studios and networks being willing to make them today, knowing audiences will buy into them an don't want 30 min or 1 hour shows where the story starts and ends in that window.

You can't put Sopranos and the Wire in the same sentence. The Wire is distantly behind Sopranos.

It isn't distantly behind it at all, a strong argument it is ahead of it. Both are great shows though and Lahey is correct.

I think for those who have never got why the wire was so good and is rated so highly by critics in those top X lists of TV shows,

Scandi stuff also deserves a shout.

The Killing and The Bridge were both excellent

The Bridge is arguably the best noir crime series of the past 25 years ( S1 and S2 especially).

Breaking Bad is good, very good at times, but not excellent, IMO. And no rewatch value at all.

The Wire, Sporanos and West Wing are better shows than BB.

That article doesn’t convince me at all. The three chances I gave it are what made up my mind. Season one, pretty good, season two absolutely dire.

For this genre it’s not in the same stratosphere as Gomorrah or The Sopranos as far as I’m concerned.

I can see why some people like it, and kudos to those with the determination to struggle through season 2. Just not for me.

Breaking Bad was good, but as I’ve said previously I. The thread it has very little rewatch value. A lot of filler in BB when you revisit without the benefit of the shock value.

I don't agree with the "BB has little rewatch value" point of view. It's re-watchable for me because of the characters, acting, script. I'm watching it for the third time at the moment and am finding it funnier than I ever did before. Obviously it will have lost some impact because you know what's coming next but that's the same with anything. I think it still holds up. Not as well as The Sopranos maybe because that is very much a dialogue and character driven show.

If you want something with little re-watch value I recommend Game of Thrones. That last season sucked all the life out of it and makes you not want to revisit it again.

I think Boardwalk Empire was very underrated.

As a fan of Martin Scorcese I thought it was much better than the Irishman (I know that was a film).

The thing I like about BB was the originality and the fact each season finale left you desperate for more.

I enjoyed Boardwalk Empire. Great cast
