EFL

From Phill Hay

“Some chatter developing about ending the EFL season here and now. As we wrote in this piece, there are clubs in Leagues One and Two who favour that option. But in the Championship they're still talking about playing out the last nine games"

One post I found interesting is what happens if it is null and voided. In effect it means none of the games took place so fans should get a refund for every game, every membership and every season ticket.

Can’t see that argument standing up in court though.

-----snip-----

FP needs to be relaxed so owners are allowed to inject cash to keep clubs afloat at this point.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Spot on!
It won't help every club though - there needs to be a central fund from which clubs can be funded when circumstances threaten their survival. There would need to be checks to make sure that money didn't go to clubs that were simply mismanaged or overreaching.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Its why I've suggested FIFA, UEFA, FA etc should be looking to assist with their funds.

This pandemic and how countries handle it is an existential threat to clubs, especially those lower down leagues, who even if football restarts behind closed doors in a couple of months will not financially survive.

I think the bigger clubs are in for a shock too, they can't keep spending 20 mill a week on players wages with virtually no income for weeks.

National League clubs now voted to end season immediately:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52381612

A National League statement added: "In the knowledge that the ordinary resolution has passed, the League's board has chosen to communicate the decision now and before the last few responses are received, which will not change the outcome, to enable clubs to make business decisions with greater clarity as soon as possible.
---
And that last bit is the important bit. The longer clubs hang on in hope of football and seeing money exiting the club in wages, the less likely they are to survive long term.

Ridiculous if the season was ended as void - how is tht even fair? The likes of Leeds and West Brom don’t you up and the likes of Norwich, villa West Ham get another crack at the premier league with all it’s riches and tv funding.

IF the season is ended - should be complete as it stands or take teams average points per game. Absolutely ridiculous to end it as null / voided. Personally would be fuming if that happens

I don't think it will be voided, but do think it will end early as Ive been saying for ages, the longer it goes on, the less options there are and the simpler solution becomes the one most likely to happen.

BUT, imagine if clubs get to vote how they decide who gets promoted. Will everyone still be saying Leeds best side or will some other system come into play?

It's clear that we're in lockdown until a vaccine is sourced - maybe 12 months? They'll open a few non essential stores here and there etc but social distancing will continue for the foreseeable. No question about that.

If you can play games behind closed doors with a manageable solution, why not?

If you can't and the practicalities are too much, surely common sense will Prevail and they'll end the season as it stands and await government instruction for timing of next season.

I don't think it's lockdown like this till vaccine, but a lockdown/release lockdown/release cycle until vaccine, it will really hurt our economy and society and you will still get a lot of people infected and there is no guarantee of any immunity, indeed there is always a possibility that if you get re-infected you get it worse second time around around.

A voice of sanity in all this at present is Devi Sridhar who is Professor and Chair of Global Public Health at the University of Edinburgh.

Without trying to finger point or blame, if we had acted sooner and followed a test/isolate/trace policy as S Korea had from early January we could have gone through a lot less overall pain.

Population of Germany 83 million , South Korea 52 million, UK 63 million.

I was initially sympathetic with our authorities but comparing the death tolls to date of all 3 democratic countries I've now changed my view.

The Care Home situation is a disgrace and the forward planning with respect to PPE shows how our authorities have been caught napping for quite a period of time.

To cap it all the bulk of the NHS and care workers who get payed a fraction of your average PL footballer are the ones taking the bullets.

I haven't said much lately as football just isn't that important apart from the non playing staff and lower leagues in general that do have my sympathies as like a lot of others in the nation, they are in a really tough place.

.....should have said key workers in general - all have my total respect.

I think it's almost certain now that the season won't just be voided. If it gets cancelled early then we will likely follow what Scotland have done and decide the league's on PPG. Up there, they have called the lower leagues now, but allowed the SPL to wait to see if it will get to finish, but if it doesn't then I believe they default to a PPG system.

Seems fair enough.
