Can someone further explain the UK governments failings in the handling of the Coronavirus please?
This is not a question about political parties. I don't want this to be a comparison of what could have happened under alternative leadership, I'd genuinely like to know more about what specifically we have done wrong, that other countries in similar situations have not.
The arguments that I keep hearing to defend the govt are;
1)The world has a shortage of PPE, it's not just us. We can't help our lack of equipment
2) There are other similar countries like Spain, Italy, France that are struggling just the same
3) The govt's was only taking the advice that the herd strategy was optimal and that we didn't need to go into a full lockdown as early as other countries.
But how have we failed, where others have not? What could our Govt have done differently?

The government have failed every step of the way.
Slow with the lockdown - actually announcing which day the pubs would shut which means a load of people went for one last pizz up.
Cheltenham as mentioned above, and other sporting events planned..
This slow response was, I feel, calculated to talk about doing a lot, but in fact did very little which plays into the herd immunity plan..
We still don’t have mandated checks at airports nor enforced quarantine. There are hundreds of airport hotels available for this to happen.
Ignoring the outcomes from the Cygnus study that outlined the NHS would collapse in the face of a pandemic. Government did nothing in that for 4 years because pursuing Brexit was more important.
With Brexit being a political ideology the government completely ignored the U.K. being invited to a EU wide procurement programme for medical equipment including PPE.
Lying about their being a logistical issue in delivering PPE - the PPE doesn’t exist. There are at this moment hundreds if not thousands of delivery drivers on furlough. Completely crazy to blame logistics - this is the same government that didn’t know “the importance of Dover” when trying to deliver Brexit.
Actually announcing that families of the NHS staff dying doing their jobs will be getting £60k - this is basically hush money.
Not having PPE and resulting in deaths means corporate manslaughter in the business world. Someone in government have done the sums on that £60k

How is that European purchasing going? Why does Germany not have enough PPE and where are the 50,000 ventilators we could have had?

Maybe because PPE isn't reusable and they're running out of stocks after showing the UK how to deal with Covid.

If you come to that conclusion for the EU, then the UKs procurement of PPE never got started, indeed was in reverse as there were stores of 30m masks but they could only find 12m of them with the government unwilling to discuss where the remainder had gone.
The UK Gov, in failing to deal with Covid-19 , is the one thing they’ve been successful at!

To his credit, exploiting unfounded fears of immigrants helped secure the presidency for Trump. Why change a winning formula.
His recent embarrassing ‘performances’ during the Covid19 press briefings has seen his overall rating take a hit.
He’s therefore going back to the tried and trusted rhetoric which helped him win in 2016. It wouldn’t surprise me if it worked again.
I expect the anti-immigration rhetoric will be ramped up the closer it gets to November.

Weird how the debate shifted away from the facts of the matter quickly when challenged. From complaining that small businesses should get help, not illegal immigrants (they're both getting assistance) to.. I'm not even sure what this is now. It appears to be a weird breed of nationalism without a point or purpose. Is this what Trumpism looks like?

Poolmyfinger - you didn't answer my previous question, though it was more one to ask yourself - why do you have an issue with illegal immigrants getting help during a pandemic? For context, economically, it makes a great deal of sense. America will be far worse off if all of the undocumented migrants are on the streets surviving on the welfare system rather than working and contributing to it. Then you have the knock-on effects on all of the businesses they'd be buying stuff from. Also, many of those small businesses you are so keen to see get money no doubt benefit from undocumented migrants - casual labour is what keeps the wheels turning in a number of US states.
I guess my point is - if you love America as much as you claim to - why would you want to hurt it? It seems you are thinking short-term and have been triggered by a headline rather than thinking about the actual impacts of such decisions on the country. Economists understand the impact of providing aid, and aid packages are designed using solid models and projections. They do it because it's a net gain for the economy. Simple as. And before you say 'kick em out' - that would cost billions and be ineffective anyway. As we know from past efforts, and the insanity that is the wall.

It’s ok for Mr white man explorer to take an entire country because Mr Native American and Mr Mexican couldn’t defend it. However migrants getting a few dollars help during a global pandemic makes him lose hisshit
