I didn't know Jack on a personable basis but had plenty of association with him as he was a coach for Leeds City Boys...he told me off a few times on Oldfield Lane ground!
My father used to booze with him and few others on a
Sunday lunchtime after home games on the Saturday, the late Peter Gunby was a good friend of Jack and my father, he played for East End Park and had associations with Leeds United...happy days and good memories.

Jack imo the 2nd best dribbling player after Eddie Gray, but Revie put paid to his dribbling forays upfield, disciplined him and he became a World Cup winning centre half! Happy birthday Jack!

Ps...my father came home one Sunday afternoon, half cut as usual...he gave me a scrappy bit of paper and said to me "I've got you Big Jacks autograph!"
I replied "well he's been coaching me for the last six months could have had his autograph hundreds of times! F...kinnell!

"I didn't know Jack on a personable basis..."

Is that because he wasn't very personable by most accounts?

Haha very good! That should be 'personal basis'

As far as I know he was personable to his drinking mates off the field, but not very personable on the field to his opponents, as I observed many times!

Tell us more about him as a youth coach. How was he at practices and how was he at games - before, during and after games. How did he treat referees at these youth games?

Well Jonny he only took us for coaching sessions he didn't go to our games.
He was professional at all times, took his coaching very serious from what I saw....well he did become a top manager.
He told me off on 2 occasions, once for my positioning in a defensive situation and the week after for being on the wrong side of an opponent when making a tackle.
He always explained well, took plenty of time stopping the action when necessary.
I was impressed at his contributions to coaching, he sometimes did alternate sessions with Bobby Collins..
When Trevor Cherry died I wondered if I had played against him, Leeds v Huddersfield boys was a standard fixture...he was born the same year as me, 1948...but I don't know if I did play against him really, just guessing.

Sounds cool, great memory!

I have memories of doing a Sir Stan Matthews clinic as a 9 or 10 year old.

Was also coached by a current pro as a U16 player even though I supported the club from the other side of town.

As you might imagine Jack could really shout at a distance...but he was good with the lads, had a laugh with him as well!

Stanley Matthews what a fantastic player, but I never saw him play...think it was mid 1950s and Leeds were playing Stoke, an evening match...and I was all set to watch him, thrilled to see the great Matthews...erm got to ER, can't remember who I went with, I would be only 6 or 7....didn't see him play, pulled out at the last minute, injured! What a let down, so disappointed!
