Referees

With all the talk of whether football will/should start soon there is lots of discussion about clubs, players and fans

But what about the refs?

Was listening to a ref speaking the other night and he was basically saying that they simply can't get the fitness required to oversee a game.

Basically refs aren't multi-million pound earners like players, able to afford their own private gyms at home etc. Refs have a garage with weights if that.
Obviously (he said) refs have kept up things like running but there is more to it than that. To start a season without them going through the correct training will be disaster.

Have to say never thought of the refs when discussion has taken place. But it's a fair point/s

Excuse my ignorance but what is it that refs need to do to train other than run?

Try again

Get some weights the same weight as a linesman’s flag. Cost a fortune though.

Yeah I don't see why they can't run on a field by themselves to keep up fitness.

It does raise the larger question of the number of people required to put on a football game. It seems they are anticipating 300 people to be in and around the stadiums even on a fully 'locked down' match day. Who'll all have to be travelling to and from games, will have to be regularly tested and isolated just in case.. should be okay though as long as they Stay Alert

Premier league refs are full time surely

There's no excuse for them to be less fit than they need to be... They can run and include sharp turns, sprints etc

PL refs earn about £100k a year. They can definitely afford a treadmill/home gym.

I trained myself to run a marathon using - wait for it - the road....

How much ground do PL refs cover in a game, considering the top players cover 11-13km...

When I was working, as an estate agent (sorry) every other house had an exercise bike or treadmill in the garage. When I asked if they were used the owners would say " I did for the first year, but not since," with a smile.
There must be thousands for sale for next to nothing.

Just another problem out of many

What do they do when games stop at the end of the season? When they are at the EURO's or a World Cup before preseason starts? What stops them doing the same? Exercise has been allowed and now you can do more of it.

Sorry I did this OP and something came up so didn't return to it.

In answer to your question I too was surprised when I was listening to the radio and the training refs doneas discussed.

I will have to listen again, if I find it to go into specifics. But the way they made it sound it was going to be really hard for refs to be match fit
