Best ‘Nearly Goals’

Was watching this Sky Sports video of the best PL ‘nearly’ goals:

I found it quite entertaining. Normally when you watch a best goals/freekicks/saves etc. Compilation you’ve seen most of them before. Kinda cool seeing these great strikes over the years, some from famous players, that were inches away from probably being goal of the season or even more famous.

Are there any other ‘nearly’ goals that spring to mind? The ones that did for me..

Mata vs Man United 2012

To this day this one still annoys me greatly. To set the scene..we were leading 3-0 at HT. In the second half United had scored 3 goals to make it 3-3, a crazy match. In the last few minutes of the game..Juan Mata steps up to take the free kick. It’s quite far out but still suits his left foot. Remember, Juan Mata was already Golden Boy at Chelsea at this point, even looking back you can just tell he’s gunna do a madness.

Mata takes such a sweet freekick. It is going top corner and it has reasonable power. You’d probs show videos of the FK to players to train them on technique. Somehow that caaaant De Gea pulls off this worldie save. He anticipates it well and also manages to be acrobatic enough to get there. Wtf. That FK goes in 95 times out of 100 and DDG chose that time to do that?!! Ffs that freekick would have been so famous. Last min winner from Chelsea legend Mata to make it 4-3 vs Man United at The Bridge. Nope..I’m still not over this one .

This is just so unsatisfying to watch it sticks in my mind. Would’ve been such a great goal, right down to the chipped finish. The defender should really have just allowed it for the sake of footy. Still I guess Moura eventually got his revenge against Ajax eh.

Neymar vs Strasbourg, 2019

I don’t even know which player missed the chance so just put Neymar as the nearly goal is all about him anyway. Imagine sleeping at night knowing you missed this one on one after Neymar done all that and even served up the no look pass at the end. Shameful.

Another famous one. A bit of an overrated ‘nearly’ goal for me. Perhaps we can rank our overrated ‘nearly’ goals in the next lockdown thread lol.

There’s one more that’s always stuck in my mind. Lukaku at Everton nearly scored this cracking goal, this 30 yard volley that hit the crossbar, it defo would have been goal of the season standard. I remember seeing it on MOTD. Unfortunately I can’t remember when it was now or what team it was against and whenever I search for it there is no footage online, it’s truly forgotten about. Not sure if anyone else remembers.
