I wouldn't say Gerrard was the single best midfielder in the PL. For pure inspirational effect and probably equal vision/passing ability that I think matched Stevie G, I would have to go with Roy Keane.

I'd go with Gerrard because he was more complete. Gerrard could play all of Keane's roles in the team to the level of a world class player. Keane could hardly play any of Gerrard's roles to a world class level. Keane was more of specialised midfielder and average anywhere else IMO compared to Gerrard.

If you were forming a world team and had only one place left in the team, would you take Gerrard or Keane? I'd take Gerrard.

The ultimate midfielder is one that can do it all IMO.

That is the problem though. Hard to fit in two midfield generals. Skill-wise Gerrard was probably better but for effort and inspiration I would take Keane. The opposition may have admired Stevie's ability but Keane built a reputation that frightened them. He was pretty good boxer as well. Much as I admire Stevie G, I would pick Keane as my man.

He said Gerrard would have won the league if VAR had been in place when he was playing

Fair enough but no way Keane beats Stevie for effort and inspiration in my book. I'll give you the frightening part though, players would have been more afraid of Keane than Gerrard.
