Combined Chelsea/Liverpool team

The United board did it yesterday, thought it might be fun to do it for Chelsea today. My team:

Alisson
Trent Rudiger Van Dijk Robertson
Kante Kovacic
Pulisic Ziyech Mane
Salah

What would your combined team be?

I find Liverpool this season appear to play like even more of a data-analyst driven team. It transpires like they are playing to the numbers, like the match will be decided by "clinch" moments; expected mistakes which their front three so ruthlessly capitalise on. They are a pragmatists wet-dream.

I will say that while the direction Klopp has taken away from the idealism of "heavy-metal football" isn't as entertaining to watch, what he has created is so impressive, at least tactically. There is the push and pull of Mane/Salah running in behind and/or Firmino dropping deep to progress to the attacking third. And the players who they rely on to find the front three are the fullbacks, a position which is afforded more time on the ball than any other, aside from centre-back and keeper. It is direct and functional, but very difficult to stop.

Sideshow. I've noticed you have a habit of taking something I express in terms of a feeling, agreeing with it, and then explaining away the other side with grounded logic

Liverpool playing like a data analysts' robotic creation is spot on btw, and it's such a stark contrast to the swashbuckling, lets party football they were playing before this

I was interested so looked it up, Liverpool have put in the 2nd highest number of crosses this season, behind Man City.

Looking at the opposition breakdown it’s pretty clear we target crosses against some teams much more than others. Interestingly we’ve crossed the least amount of times this season when playing Chelsea.

Given another 6 months of regular football and I reckon Reece James will be a serious contender for the England RB position with TTA!

I think he’ll struggle to make it into the squad. TAA is obviously going to be the main man, but AWB is knocking on the door and Southgate has a hard on for Trippier as well. James looks promising, though.

Only a personal opinion of course but I believe James to be a much better player than AWB!

He’s yet to show it. He looks more of a threat going forward, for sure, but AWB has been consistently one of the best right backs in the prem for two seasons, even if lacking going forward. And yet both him and TAA haven’t managed to nail down the right back spot for England due to Trippier and Walker.

It’s a shame we don’t have the same quality and depth on the other side.

I think one thing we can agree on, is at national level we look to have terrific competition for years to come!

James is future captain material, but I don’t feel he’s shown that yet on the pitch.

Sideshow, Liverpool are tactically fascinating for sure. Outside of back 3 systems I don't think we'll see another team whose key players are the full backs for a very long time.

And what's incredible is they are full backs, not wingers converted into full backs which most teams would have to do to replicate this. That's a credit to the coaching & management.
