When the club that eventually became City were founded in Gorton, that wasn't part of Manchester. They moved into the city from Lancashire.

It's be pretty sad to constantly bang on about whether a club plays in / was founded within the city boundaries though.

Newton Heath wasn't part of Manchester when a bunch of scruffy railway workers from Yorkshire decided they wanted to start a football tea.

The railway works team was started by a Scouser I think (might be wrong, read it somewhere) and the players were local.... Are you getting the Yorkshire thing from the name of the railway company? (Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway)

Where are you getting this from, Binky? That must have been a hell of a commute in those days to work at the Newton Heath railway yard.
