Spain v France Euro 2000

On bbc 2 now

Really entertaining game and some incredible players - Henry, Zidane, Viera, Thuram and then Raul, Pep etc

Enjoying watching it. It’s mad how Spain’s identity as a footballing nation was just about to completely change.

I have to say though - for all the articles you get on here comparing recent champions to Uniteds treble winners or Arsenals invincibles, the technical ability of players now is just another level. The quality of passing has improved so much when you look at the likes of De Bruyne or Alexander-Arnold

Henry, national hero
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you still pretending to be French??
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The poster or the nationality?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No silly, you’re French, he’s pretending to be French

Hope that clears it up

Pretending?

Just thinking about who was playing in the PL around 1999/2000.

Scholes, Giggs, Beckham, Vieira, Gerrard, Zola, Keane, Pires, Ljunberg, Bergkamp, Henry, Kanu, Carrick, Lampard, Di Canio, Fowler, Owen.

No doubt a fair few glaring omissions, but these boys could all do bits.

Hardly anyone in the current Man City side can pass like De Bruyne or Trent, so I don't think using them as a barometer to say the standard of passing nowadays is any fairer than saying the standard of passing nowadays is toilet when you think about what Beckham was doing in the 90s before football clubs had groundsmen.

I’m not going to debate that with you. I think the general level of passing ability across the board is far higher than it was 20 years ago myself.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I think generally that's probably true, but in my opinions only insofar as the quality of the average player in our league has improved dramatically in that period of time.

Teams outside the top 4 sides in England are no longer having to settle for the Muzzy Izzet's or Kinkladze's of the world.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Come on. Compare that Spain team in 2000 to their national team a decade later. The standard of technical ability is on another level, and that Spain team in 2000 had some great players of the era.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
spain didnt base their approach on all out short passing uber technical stuff with 5ft 1 players back then

it was thought in spain that style wouldnt win anything

aragones showed it could win (before Pep had even started as farza manager btw)

But had they, I have no doubt Guardiola and Luis Enrique would've wreaked havoc on teams.
