Modern Slavery

It's very rare that I try and do something positive, but I feel this is a greater cause than me that really needs action and not just more hollow pontificating, especially so given the current climate.

I have been sending various messages to present and past footballers in the hope to raise awareness of modern slavery that is in full view of the public, and is only for profit and vanity.. the Qatar World Cup.

https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/international/world-cup-2022-qatars-workers-slaves-building-mausoleums-stadiums-modern-slavery-kafala-a7980816.html "

What is happening in Qatar right now is beyond appalling, yet we just seem to accept it. Every single person who watches this World Cup is complicit in the slave trade and until we can raise awareness to boycott it, the world will be a much poorer and more immoral place.

Again, it's rare that I ask anything of anyone here, but I'm genuinely at my wit's end and on the verge of losing all faith in humanity. I know that sounds dramatic but it's where I'm at, so even one tweet or social media post to any high profile footballer would be much appreciated. If it gets through to one of them, through their army of social media drones it'll have been worth it

I see that south of the border they are seriously proposing putting people on trial without a jury in the Crown Court.

Scary times and further evidence that our democracy is crumbling before our very eyes. Imagine being in the 21st century and being denied that very fundamental and basic right

Couple that with zero culpability for anyone in office (or "advising" those in office).. and we get what is turning into an outright plutocracy.

really

Scotland have had this in place for a few decades.

Not for serious crime, which was also up for grabs North of the Border, although it completely escaped me at the time given the focus was on the rising death toll.

I found this opinion piece on trans rights to be quite enlightening.

Their struggle to be recognised both in law and socially certainly has echoes of the gay rights movement decades ago.

Myths aplenty, scare mongering from all angles, demonisation of anything trans, being accused of mental illness and that they can be "cured"

Juke thanks for this link, my stepson has told his mum he is trans, I am not supposed to know about it as he is keeping it private for now. Trying to get my head around it all and to be supportive when the time comes and he feels confident enough to bring it up. Part of me is convinced that he is just trying to work out who he is but that is just blind ignorance on my part.

I'm well aware you can be tried without a jury here, my wee bro was.

What is being suggested in England and Wales is that the most serious "minor" crimes will no longer be tried by Juries.. as far as I can make out.

Offences that will put people in prisons for years if found guilty.

What is being proposed is the removal of current rights in order to facilitate trials that have been backlogged due to successive Tory Governments underfunding the judicial system.

What’s even more worrying is that defendants are being persuaded to plea bargain instead of potentially being kept inside until the backlog is cleared.

Very US.

"Obviously that leaves aside the internal civil war going on in the SNP regarding trans rights."

I used to have a degree of respect for Joanne Cherry but she's lost it all with her stance on trans rights.

I understand both sides of the argument to be honest.

This is interesting. Continue.

JJ, commendable.
A few years ago the nationalist xenophobic government here banned Sikh boys from wearing their headgear. (The wee wan not the big turban.) I got on here and asked folk to email FIFA. Wrote a letter to the local daily. Doubt my efforts had any effect, but the cants backed down after FIFA contacted them. I like to think I at least raised the point and got a few emails.

Aye I'm not expecting the world to stop turning but even if it raises the slightest bit of awareness, it's better than doing nothing at all.

I decided I wouldn't be watching even before FIFA discovered that it gets quite warm on the Arabian peninsula in winter. WTF?
The only sport organisation more vile is the IOC.
Haven't watched their product for at least a couple of decades.
