Not even through gritted teeth

Congratulations Liverpool on a fantastic season and obviously deserved title. As a child of the 80s I learned to hate your club for the repeated pain and envy it put me through (and all the glory supporters in my class who weren't that into football) and I remember how sweet it was to finally, improbably win the league. I've always dreaded the return of the LFC that crushes my hopes and dreams but...

Turns out I'm genuinely pleased for you. For one thing, the last few months have been a pause not just in football, but obviously a cessation of normal life that made us take stock on what's important. The golden rule that the world must end if Liverpool get anywhere near that perch, it turns out, wasn't so important. For another, you couldn't have been led to the promised land by a more admirable human being than Jürgen Klopp, whose football has been thrilling and sense of humanity and perspective about where football fits into the big scheme of things is so refreshing.

In the event, last night the thing that disappointed me most was Chelsea taking three points. The gap to the top four wasn't cut. The world hasn't ended.

My Liverpool supporting primary school friends are now greying and losing their hair. I hope they, and you all, are savouring this moment. Beware the influx of entitled glory supporters though - I speak from bitter experience of the 90s.

Good post.

As a kid I was spoiled watching Liverpool dominate the league and in Europe. I then had to suffer Utd dominate the Premier League as football became fashionable again.

I won't lie I've enjoyed your fall, but the important thing is how your own team are faring and the entertainment it provides. Ditching that dinosaur Mourinho was a good move and I believe that your recruitment is improving and your steadily improving.

As I get older, I find football becomes less and less life-and-death. The greatest high I experienced as a United fan was Norman Whiteside's winner in the 1985 FA Cup final. The 1999 CL meant more than the 2008. The 1993 league title meant more than the others.

I think the LFC kids in my primary school had the better side of the deal. Young enough for the glory to matter absolutely, not yet experienced enough to be embarrassed by the latchers on (as I was in the 90s).
