Which Chelsea manager during the Roman

era has had the most remarkable single season in terms of positive achievement:

a) Jose Mourinho in his first season in charge winning Chelsea's first title in 50 years and a League Cup

b)Jose Mourinho winning back to back titles for Chelsea in his second season.

c) Carlo Ancelotti winning an FA Cup and League double in his first season in charge.

d) RDM, a relatively inexperienced manager taking over Chelsea mid season from AVB and winning an FA Cup and Champions League double

e) Antonio Conte, in his first season, taking over a Chelsea team in utter disarray from the previous season and changing the formation after just 6 games to transfer Chelsea from also rans into PL champions.

But have you ever seen a CB, who spent most of his career in Tier 2 afterwards, just walk through the center of a PL winning team and score like he was taking his dog for a stroll? I seriously wonder if the entire team entered some kind of time warp for 5 seconds every time I watch that goal

OK, worst performance of the Abramovich era? Agreed.

I knew that was coming. Brummie is old everyone, just in case you weren't aware

I'm pretty old too (maybe not as old). I remember a lot of what Brummie says. I've seen many relegations and promotions, lived through the "glory days" of Dixon, Durie and Speedie and even relished a Full Members cup final win! (and defeat!).

Even Ash made a howler that day if memory serves me lol

Actually my worse under the Abramovic might suprise you and is quite recent.

Against City but not the 6-0 defeat. The 1-0 loss at the Etihad under Conte was the most disgraceful performance (probably ranking worse than any defeat in the darkest days era).

I've never felt such anger at the complete apathy of a team to compete, including the manager!

Hmm, interesting. I remember having to work that day & not bothering to catch any highlights cos most mirrored what you said, so I forget it easily.

I will say that wasn't a surprise though, Conte was well & truly fed up by that point as were the players of him, but the Sunderland game really was. I remember not being massively confident cos we'd been dodgy for weeks, but the performance was unbelievably bad. The scary thing was Sunderland didn't even play that well, they just applied themselves, we looked like we were going in slow motion. Fair play to Ancelotti for owning though, called it the worst performance he'd seen in 10 years if I remember right.

More than anything, I remember the end of the Mourinho eras, the end of Conte and Ancelotti after the Wilkins sacking as painful periods from a watching perspective. A going through the motions but not really playing with any real passion. The 0-4 loss to Bournemouth under Sarri and some of the dismal performances under Di Matteo have also been lows.

Actually 0-4 loss to Bournemouth's a good shout. Not so much performance, Sunderland was worse, but it was so predictable. The way they & we were playing (stylistically) you knew the way that game was going as soon as they scored, was just a question of how many they'd get.

Think the Sunderland one's etched in my memory because it was the first time we'd seen that great noughties team have an irredeemable game, it was so humbling. Even though the record was gone Stamford Bridge still had the unbeatable aura before that game (to me) that wasn't back until Mourinho returned - and ironically that to was shattered by Sunderland

It was an embarrassment, almost as if Conte had told them not to compete. The players ambled around even though they were one down and looked like they didn't have a care in the world.

There was a video clip somewhere of Fabregas strolling up to De Bryune, standing off him and just watching him. De Bryune passes and Fabregas just strolls away.

That clip just encapsulated to whole game for us and was the point where I fell out of love with Conte,

It was almost as if they were under instruction from him to do nothing!

It's interesting thinking of the branching themes this article makes you consider, like Lampard being almost the reverse of it as you pointed out earlier, Conte is probably the biggest discrepancy between the quality of one portion to another of his time, and as Eric's alluded too there's a few considers for that - Mourinho, Ancelotti, Sarri, etc...

What was equally reliving & frustrating about that 2nd season with Conte was the FA Cup Final. Even though the game itself was terrible you could clearly see he give a sh!t & it must've had a positive impact on the players even if they hated him, he was just as if not more infectious than Klopp when his head was in the game. A great manager who was his own worst enemy & dragged us down with him.
