In 1990..

After that infamous 18th title, Liverpool slept on their success. It was an aging team and in need of a bit of a shake up, some younger legs in the midfield, possibly up front and at the back but you rested on your laurels. How concerned are you that 30 years later, that's happening again?

Surely you need to freshen up the front three? Mane yesterday in the second half had a pass to run onto and the Villa defender smoked him to it. He would have caught the same pass just 2-3 years ago. Also, Salah is not the player he once was. His touch and close control are sloppy compared to 2 years ago and he doesn't score exciting goals anymore.

Moving into midfield you can see a real problem: Henderson, WIjnaldum and Milner are all getting on which is a huge issue as they are leaders on that pitch for Klopp.

Watching Liverpool since before the lockdown and just after, you seem like a team that has probably reached the peak of it's powers. I'm not saying your team is finished because as long as you have Klopp you'll be OK, but the bread is certainly tasting slightly more stale at Anfield. Huge investment is needed and some more creativity in midfield. Thiago isn't the answer as he is another player who is nearly 30 and won't last more than 18 months with his injury record in this league.

Watch this summer, City will spend where they need to, Chelsea and United too. Are you not concerned you're potentially falling asleep at the wheel?

Your comments are welcome.

good questions from the op, just not good timing.
anyone who thought city would romp to another title after their record breaking pts total was a bit naive.
other top teams were bound to adapt, the whole league to a degree actually. i picked liverpool to overturn that deficit and they almost did. next year i think chelsea and man utd will make it a lot closer.
liverpool will not rest on their laurels, they will buy smartly and strenghten the bench and compete again.
imo the league overall is strong but theirs a big 4 forming again.

City got 98 points after the record breaking season and won all the other domestic trophies as well

Hardly a meltdown

Yeah you saved that until this season.

the reality here is that

a) nobody can tell the future

b) everybody knows the strengths and weaknesses in the liverpool squad.

c) just about everybody who wants to listen knows the money situation currently

d) despite the press and sky etc talking about dominance nobody at Liverpool expects a divine right to dominate.

e) LFC have not played the same way each season, the change in 2018/19 was large and in 2019/20 is was certainly changed again.

We will not spend massively, we will evolve. We clearly have a fairly full squad and we do not accumulate players then look to shed the offcasts. Its patently obvious that the front 3 cannot play all games but we don't have the quality below that

If city and chelsea want to put 500mil in or whatever thats their choice.

City are at the end of a period where several players are aged and they need to refresh their team.

Utd are at the very start of a period

cheslea are at the very outset.

Liverpool have a solid 11 with no direct changes needed but 11 is not a squad.

Some horrific posts in here full of knee jerk reactions (standard with football I guess).
Everyone predicted a drop off after we finished on 97 points last season.

What I will say is that in 2/3 years from now we will need a big rebuild. Players like Van Dijk, Salah, Mane etc will all be 30/31 and we’ll need to start again. That’s when we’ll hit a crossroad with Klopp.

Depends. Don't underestimate the value of having Klopp and Edwards and the rest of that team. I'm sure they are aware of all this and will have a plan that fits our budget.

That process will be under way already. We won't let everyone get to 31 and then think we have to rebuild.

with respect 2 years of no real senior signings make keeping fresh difficult.

The team is fine but you always have to be pushing the group. Shaqiri and origi push bobody.
