Is it just me or was this competition bigger and more prestigious when it was the UEFA CUP?
I remember in the 90s big clubs around Europe loved competing in the UEFA CUP if they didn't make it to the Champions League.
It was taken rather seriously and top teams generally battled with one another to win it.
The UEFA CUP final was indeed a big event back in those days!
But for some reason since they decided to change the name to the Europa League ( which sounds pretty awful and rather boring to be fair ) a few years ago , the competition seems to have lost its prestige and has become somewhat of a burden today for many clubs around Europe to be in it.
Unless UEFA change one or two things about it , it will forever be a competition that many teams want to avoid.
It's a strange one really but there's no question that the UEFA CUP was a much bigger competition a generation ago than the EUROPA
League has been in recent years even though it's pretty much the same competition.
Can anybody explain?

Imagine if UEFA hadn't sold out and kept the champions league as just that, the champions of European league entrants only.
would have been far different winner list of the CL over the last decade or so

Would mainly be the Spanish champions over the last 10 years. Very dull.
A champions only CL would be so bereft of quality and competitiveness

The UEFA Cup was a stronger competition back when you had runners up in it. The third placed teams in the CL groups only further denigrates the competition and makes it appear nothing more than a lucky losers competition.
United are in it and I want us to win it, of course. You want to see your team win trophies. There's also the added carrot of Champions League football, should we not qualify through the league route, of course. But I'd rather we won the FA Cup, if I knew we were already in the CL next season

I think they'll run out of games. Leicester are still okay at home. We could be in a position to throw out the reserves at Leicester on the final day too, which could gift them the win
