The Real Problem at the Club.

Here's Arsenal's record of Goals scored Vs Goals conceded in the league over the past decade.

19/20 --- 51:44 ...(3 games left)
18/19 --- 73:51
17/18 --- 74:51
16/17 --- 77:44
15/16 --- 65:36
14/15 --- 71:36
13/14 --- 68:41
12/13 --- 72:37
11/12 --- 74:49
10/11 --- 72:43

Given these circumstances, does anyone else find our obsessive fixation on defensive signings a bit odd?

We're clearly struggling to find the back of the net, and find ourselves overwhelmingly reliant on a brilliant, but aging, 31-year old player who's scored 40% of our league goals this season. A tally that was almost 50% at one point.

Here's a crazy thought.......we are the Arsenal after all.

Why not go all in for an out-and-out Top striker to partner (and maybe progressively replace) Aubameyang upfront, instead of frittering more of the club's money away on obsessively stockpiling about a dozen poorly-coached defensive players?

And if you look at the numbers of chances created, the stats are even more alarming.
As Lex said, the issue is mainly our midfield, who apart from passing the ball sideways, can't do anything else. None of them is willing to take a risk and pass it forward, nevermind try a through ball. We have been over relying on our fullbacks/wingers in the past two season.
Even in the 18/19 season, the initial stats were awful until Emery decided to re-introduce Ramsey and Ozil in the squad.
If we invest in a CM and AM and can keep Auba, things should be hopefully be better.

Taking away the brain farts we have improved defensively under Arteta but the midfield has been on the decline since Cazorla injury

The lazy journos and media will probably jump on the defence once again after we play Pool and City but we have a MF that can defend, cant control games, can't assist and can't score goals

"MF that can't defend

Yeah we definitely look more organised defensively. But we have dumb players, who can let you down at any moment no matter how well you coach them. We still concede too many shots and too often opposition run straight through our midfield and expose a defender one on one. Midfield has got bit better defending, but still room for improvement especially through the middle

ATTACK WINS GAMES

DEFENCE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS

That saying is true in most any team sport of this nature. It's not how well you can get the lead but how well you can PROTECT a lead. Which will decide if you are a champion. So the qustion really Gillespie, is why are you NOT hell bent on finally fixing our 20 year crap defence, just like the rest of us. Don't you want to win the PL title again and finally win a CL title? We do, even Castor...I think.

As for defence, is saliba quick?

A lot of the top teams have fairly quick cb but unfortunately we have some of the slowest

I get what you're saying.

But I also wouldn't want the club to overcompensate and reinvent itself as the new Burnley/Sheffield.

I actually agree with Castor on something. I don't like seeing Auba and Laca on together either. both play better solo, with 2 wingers. I think Auba out wide has been due to Saka's inexperience and needing to limit his playing time due to age. Also he had to cover LB.

Partly why the total disappearance of Martinelli has been both baffling and annoying. I'd wouldn't have minded seeing him, Saka and Nelson sharing LW duty all season with Laca or Auba up front. Think all 5 players would have been better off for it too, personally.

I'm hoping we keep both Laca and Auba and do that next season. With both the age they are, splitting that gametime between them at CF, is a program their bodies are more than happy to get with. Neither one wants to be running for 90 mins these days. Not unless he really, REALLY has to

That said, unless the rumour regarding Silva is true and it happens.
________

WB2, I dont know from where do you get that rumour we are signing a washed up 36 years old CB ffs?

The let down in attack can be completely attributed to pepe. Not contributing enough at all. Hopefully he settles in next year
