Go for the jugular vs West Ham?

Bad day today.

We didn’t turn up and the best side won. We gifted them 3 goals.

Anyway these things happen and we move on.

Massive game on Wednesday. While 3 points is the main thing a 3 goal victory would mean Leicester would need to beat us by 2 to overtake us on the last day. If we win by 5 they need to beat us by 3.

Not saying that I expect it or it’s likely but West Ham are safe now unless there’s a miracle.

Let’s say we go 2 goals up in the 1st half I reckon we should try go all out to score as many as possible.

In previous games that we’ve lead comfortable in we’ve hauled off key players and the level has dropped.

Again saying we’ll do this or even win and I’d take a scrappy one goal win but if we do find ourselves 2 up at an earlyish stage I think we should really push on for more.

Playing it into the corner and boxing a team in used to be a tactic in the past.

It would be better than giving the ball straight to Lindelof or Maguire who just dawdle on it.

West Ham have been hard at it and have now reached their goal

so basically we're hoping that west ham have just c()m, and are having a quick smoke before nodding off?

Don, yeah that could be the case. At least things are in our own hands now. I’m hoping Ole will take goal difference into account and send the team out there to batter them in the first half. We need a reaction after the last three performances. We’re in danger of throwing it all away after doing so well to get back up there with Chelsea and Leicester.

I think today has shown us that to get the best out of our team we need to get on the front foot and always start positively. That's true no matter what XI we put out. I understand trying to keep it tight but we were far too passive today. Once our players saw Chelsea getting away with a few fouls we needed someone to be a kant and do the same. We didn't have that today.
------------------------
We didn't play well in the first half, largely due to the changes. I was actually still confident as we approached half time at 0-0 due to the options on the bench but once you gift a team like Chelsea a 2 goal lead to sit back on, you're pretty much done.

De Gea is a big problem. I have spent this whole season on edge whenever the ball goes anywhere near him, even at a snail's pace. I am absolutely sure our back 4 must feel the same way.

That’s another thing, if Chelsea shiiiit the bed in their last two games we could get top four with just the three points from West Ham.

this is true. slightly annoying that our match is before theirs on wednesday.

i still think we'll be ok, but there are certain scenarios where we will be much better on wednesday shutting up shops than going for it - eg if we are 1-0 up with 10 minutes to go, we may be better securing the 1-0 win that going hell for leather to score twice in the last 10 minutes. if we have players knackered, or with slight knocks, we may prefer to take them off with sunday in mind, than keep them on in the hope of nabbing more goals.

in any event, at least it's exciting. not global pandemic crashing economies and overturning an entire way of life exciting, but fun.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There is no scenario in which we should be looking to shut up shop. Every time we attempt to do that, we end up throwing away points. Our defence isn't good enough and the tactics we inevitably employ (everyone behind the ball and just hoof it back to the opposition) make the pressure insurmountable. We need to be at least 2 up in the latter stages, otherwise we can and will throw the points away

West Ham have been hard at it and have now reached their goal - I think a drop in intensity is only natural in that situation, sort of like what youve seen with Liverpool.

--------------------------------------------

Conversely I wouldn't be surprised if we upped our intensity significantly. The players will be looking to bounce back quickly from today's horror show. It might just give them the kick they need to complete the job.

Agree. This team isn't well equipped to deal with shutting out the opposition and seeing out games when it absolutely matters.

Here's a scenario that never ever happened yet in the EPL...Assuming Chelsea taking 3rd and us and Leicester to fight it over final 4th spot

If United’s game win against West Ham ended as 5-3, and assuming Leicester did beat United 1-0 on the last league day, given the points tally, the GD tally, the goals scored tally and the head-to-head tally, United and Leicester would be forced to play each other again in what would be a play-off for the final CL spot.
