Best Liverpool XI of All Time

The BBC are running the above. I didn't fit any current players into the team and most of my knowledge on the players before the 80s is based on a history of Liverpool book I had read a couple of times before being forced to write it out, front to back, for coming home stoned when I was 15. It went something like this - "your eyes look funny". "oh I'm just tired". "what did you do with the money I gave you?" "I bought Chinese food." "so you don't want your dinner?". "I do, I'm starving!". "aha, you've been on the wacky!"

Anyway, what's yours?

Mine on the link below.

Probably would have had Rush ahead of Beardsley and Dalglish in Beardsley's position but it didn't allow me and perhaps Liddell ahead of Barnes or Highway but again it didn't allow me.

Neal was definitely a right back.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He started as a left back. Believe me, I wrote lineups out by hand for a week
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He may well have done, but I’m pretty sure my memories of him are as a right back. Also, I see Nicol as a left back, but I’m not confident on that. I think maybe he played all across the back line at various times??

One thing I’ve noticed, is that I’m talking of this generation of players like the older generations talk about the likes of Matthews, Stiles etc I’m officially getting old 😒

Nicol was right back but sometimes played left back.

That’s why I’m surprised he was not mentioned in the list, he played nearly everywhere in his time at the club including midfield and I don’t think I ever saw him play a bad game. The ultimate utility player for my money.

(He’s now on the list)

I have him in at LB.I THINK he played there when he won the 1989 POTY?

Yeah I remember him playing there a lot.

Neal—-Hansen—-Lawrenson—-Nicol

It doesn’t get much better than that but there is Smith, Yeats and now Virgil who could easily be in that back four. Chris Lawler would be the other player I dithered over for RB. I think Lawro played a few games at LB also, he was blindingly quick in his prime.

Won’t be long before TAA would get a place at the rate he is improving.

To be fair you've had some great players down the years ….. for defenders not sure I've heard Hyppia mentioned?

We were garbage in defence when he arrived at the club and Sami and Henchoz pretty much transformed the team so like you say deserve a mention. I would put Sami just a shade behind the likes of Hansen and Lawro. Not far behind though mind,

I'm old enough to remember watching that Liverpool side from the 80s, though not as close as many on this thread I concede. But from memory Hansen was pure class, I don't recall thinking the same of Lawro (and I can't abide his commentary now!!). Removing the generations/side, I remember thinking how good Sami was. But I do respect the views of fans who'd have watched far closer than me.

I'm a bit too young to remember Emlyn Hughes but I've heard he was a terrific defender.
